On 3/30/12 at 6:01p.m., Newton Police responded to a report of a motor
vehicle accident with injury on Sparta Avenue nearest to the
intersection of Woodside Avenue.
Investigation revealed that Stephanie Lopez of Spring Street, Newton,
age 20, had been operating a 2001 Nissan Xterra westbound on Sparta
Avenue when she failed to maintain her lane and crossed over the
double center line for an unknown reason and struck a 2003 Mazda PR5
head on which was being operated eastbound on Sparta Avenue by
Christopher Dziuba, age 17, of Highview Road, Newton.
As a result of the collision, Lopez complained of pain to her
abdominal region and was transported to Morristown Memorial Hospital.
Her passenger, Justin Foster, age 21 (also of Spring Street, Newton)
complained of neck and chest pain and was taken to Newton Medical
Center. Dziuba suffered an injury to his lower leg and was also
brought to Newton Medical Center for treatment.
Newton First Aid Squad and Atlantic Ambulance responded to the scene.
Lopez was issued for the following:
N.J.S. 39:4-97 (Careless Driving)
N.J.S. 39:4-82 (Failure to Maintain Lane)
Both vehicles sustained extensive damage and were towed from the
scene.
Officers involved: Ptl. Scott King, Ptl. Scott Vertetis, Ptl. John
Flanagan, Sgt. Frank Philhower, Ptl. Kenneth Teets and Ptl. Jason
Miller.
Case pending an appearance in Newton Municipal Court.
