to Newton Police Department Press Group
On 3/9/12 at 11:48a.m., Newton Police officers responded to a report
of a pedestrian struck by a motor vehicle at the intersection of
Spring Street and Union Place.
Subsequent investigation revealed that Jane Kays, 65, of Mill Street
was in the process of crossing Union Place in a westerly direction
(while utilizing the crosswalk) when she was struck by a 2011 black
BMW X3 that was being operated by Alysha Policastro, 19, of Hillside
Drive, Andover, NJ. Policastro was in the process of turning left
from Spring Street onto Union Place when she failed to observe the
pedestrian.
Kays was transported to the Newton Medical Center by Newton First Aid
Squad as a result of her injuries. Policastro was uninjured.
Policastro was issued for the following:
39:4-97 Careless Driving
39:4-36 Failure to Yield to a Pedestrian Within A Crosswalk
Case pending an appearance in Newton Municipal Court 0n 3/27/12.
