So, Mariano. Any plans for your beautiful app now that Google is shutting Reader in July 2013? I use your app every day. Looking at alternatives that will give my synced, cross-platform access, but I would prefer to not have to. Thanks for your work.

Given that Google only announced this 5 hours ago, it's probably a little early to ask Mariano about his plans. ;-)

Your right, but maybe he need some alternativ hints from us to lower his research-time:

- Newsblur sync  would be very nice! (https://github.com/samuelclay/NewsBlur#readme)

Seconded, I think. The other cloud-based alternative suggested by http://lifehacker.com/5990456/google-reader-is-getting-shut-down-here-are-the-best-alternatives is Feedly.

Newsrob is the most used app on my phone so first things first, will it still be here after July 1st?  I've just woken up and my brain is fuzzy, it's Google Reader going away yes? not RSS?

Hmm, according to http://whatleydude.com/2013/03/google-reader-is-shutting-down-on-july-1st-2013/ , Feedly is transitioning to a Google Reader-compatible API by July, so that might be easier for Mariano.

Newsblur looks awesome, but the of android client is very crashy. The advantage of newsblur seems to be that it's all on github, so if the apis aren't great, that can be fixed.

The biggest downside with both feedly and newsblur - at the moment - is that they seem to have no offline support, which is the killer feature for me (ally reading is on the train where reception is patchy at best).

Feedly claim they'll introduce offline reading with Feedly Pro:

"Feedly Mobile does not yet offer offline support but this is
something we are working on. More later this year when we release
feedly pro."

Heard about Digg planning to build a GR-alike reader with API. But seems it will take at least half a year.

FWIW, I would be willing to pay again for a new version of NewsRob that supported synced, cross-platform reading of my RSS feeds.

Not much to add other than hoping that NewsRob continues to survive. I will wait until Mario comes up with a plan before choosing another service as the only thing that I care about is being able to use NewsRob.

Same as the others. I'll pretty much subscribe to whatever service NewsRob says it's going to work with

Ditto, my key requirement is to hopefully keep using NR! Am also happy to pay a new fee.

Maybe we should all write to Edwin, CEO of feedly (ed...@feedly.com) and ask him to help integrate NewsRob with Feedly.

I think they are overwhelmed by all the new users. Let's wait until they are able to respons when things have calmed down a bit.

I have been playing with Feedly it's a good service... but your Android app still rocks in comparison to theirs. If you move your app to work with Feedly I second what several others have offered to re-purchase the new Feedly compatible app. The offline sync you have is second to none!!!

Thanks for the offer.

The Feedly backend API will supposedly compatible to the current GR API. So it should be very limited effort. We'll see. Haven't heard from them about this in a while.

what about digg reader? I'm sure others will be launching reader API compatible services. perhaps allow people to set their own host? or standardise the API and publish it?

I believe the short term plan, should someone actually make a GR compatible API available, is to allow the user to change the server address. Should Mariano decide to move forward with an OSS approach, I would plan to start adding an abstraction layer to the sync engine, should there not already be one, and create a standardized plugin API. Then we can just let the user pick what they want to sync with. This is a nice option for closed services, they can publish a plugin on the app store and any NR user can just install it, no need to share details of implementation. Any sync stuff I work on will be published, documented services though. I don't have enough time available to reverse-engineer sync APIs from packet captures and such. And don't want to have my hard work rendered useless when said service decides to change their API. It's just not worth it when there are better targets to hit.

Right now, should this happen, I think NewsBlur will be the first target I aim at. The whole thing is OSS, so I can set up my own server as a test environment if I need to. They have a nice web UI, which some users need available, and as I can read the source code and even change it on my test setup, I can be certain to get very good integration. They even have a nice feature to import Google Reader feed lists, so transitioning to it is very easy for users. And, because they are OSS, I can just set up my own server should they decide to shut down. Always a nice option to have should the excrement impact the air moving device.

Fleedly sucks, Flipboard sucks! there is any app who permits keep unread some items and offline reading (with pictures of course)?

TheOldReader is really nice! but doesnt have any mobile app (they says working on that)... what we going to do?

What are your option?

I would also BUY again if you make it compatible with Feedly or any other cloud engine.

I also love NewsRob and can't find any other service / app, that fit so perfectly in my life.

Just to throw another tool in the round: What about Tiny Tiny RSS? I set it up on my server and it looks ok. But the Android client is far away from being perfect as NR it is. The benefit would be, that ttrss is OSS and everybody can host it by itself. Also a couple of service providers can provide ttrss for the non-techie users, I've heard at least of one ;)
And self-hosting / OSS means WE can decide. when we retire RSS :D

One vote here to synchronize Newsrob with https://feedbin.me/ which looks to have a clean API.

It doesn't look too bad at first glance. I would like to see a way to get entries after a particular time or similar. I didn't see that on the first pass through the docs. GR didn't have it either though, so it's not insurmountable.
