I will do my best to describe the problem I have been having with the
new beta version, which is set to sync and keep only unread articles
and manual update only.

Before starting NewsRob, I checked Google Reader and had 663 unread
articles. Did a manual sync and after it downloaded the articles I
had 663 unread in NewsRob. All good.

I went through and read many of the feeds (or at least quickly went
through and skimmed the headlines, starring those I want to read and
marking as read others). However, I skipped a few feeds that I knew I
wanted to read on the computer. After going through them, I was left
with 72 unread articles in NewsRob. I then did another manual sync.

I now come back to my computer about half an hour later and Google
Reader website shows that I only have 11 unread articles, and they are
all ones that came in since I did that last Manual sync. Now if I
click on one of the feeds in Google Reader, those articles that I left
unread appear as bolded, but they are not counted in the total number
of unread or the number of unread for each feed. Most importantly,
unless I remember which feeds I left unread articles in, I would have
to go through each feed in Google Reader to see which ones have bold
articles that are not being counted in the unread count.

Hope this makes sense and would love to know if I have a weird setting
somewhere. Other than this I LOVE this program and it is a must have!

Hi Austin,
sorry for using the wrong first name the last time ...

[..]
 Thanks for the detailed explanation.

I now come back to my computer about half an hour later and Google
Reader website shows that I only have 11 unread articles,
Could you please provide me with a screenshot of the left side of your GR web app?

and they are
all ones that came in since I did that last Manual sync.  Now if I
click on one of the feeds in Google Reader, those articles that I left
unread appear as bolded, but they are not counted in the total number
of unread or the number of unread for each feed.
This is totally strange. I've never heard about this before, but then not many people used the beta. I only know from you, Henrik and me ... and two out of three have issues with it ;)
Could you also provide me with a screenshot of one of the feeds where you can the bolded articles titles, but no new articles on the navigation? In particular I would be interested if it shows (x new items) on top of the content column.

Do you use a Mac? Do you know about Cmd+Shift+4? You can then select an area of your desktop and a screenshot is created on your Desktop folder.

 Most importantly,
unless I remember which feeds I left unread articles in, I would have
to go through each feed in Google Reader to see which ones have bold
articles that are not being counted in the unread count.
Very strange. Usually this kind of issues (navigation not in sync with the actual content is solved for me by starting the GR webapp in a new tab).

Hope this makes sense and would love to know if I have a weird setting
somewhere.  Other than this I LOVE this program and it is a must have!
Thanks, it's great hearing that and also thanks for taking the time to describe your steps in such detail that it was easy to follow.

For the future it could be helpful to enable logging. To do that put "debug=1" into a file called "newsrob.debug" in the root of your sdcard. After restarting the NewsRob process it will log to a file called "newsrob.log" in the sd card's root.
But please a try a login/logout in the GR webapp first ;-)

I will grab the screen shots this evening and send them to you.

I think that last step about adding some line to the debug file is
over my head. I am lucky I was able to get the beta version to
install outside of the Market.

Sure, no problem. As you were describing your actions in so much detail I thought you were a developer, as many Android users are ;-)

Anyway, I attached the file, but wait with it. I will explain in detail how to get it to your sd card when this is necessary. Let's first check if the logout / login doesn't already help.

I couldn't figure out how to upload the photo to this group, but here
is a link to the screenshot:

http://twitpic.com/q1s4t

To summarize, I did the same thing today as yesterday. Manually syncd
NewsRob, and confirmed that I had the same number of unread messages
show up in NewsRob as I had at that time in Google Reader. Went about
my business of reading through feeds nad marking them all-read when
done. After going through most of the feeds, I was left with about
40-50 unread articles. I specifically left all of the articles unread
in several feeds. The example in the screen shot is the Lifehacker
feed. I did not read any of those on NewsRob.

I then did a manual sync on NewsRob, and notice something I did not
mention in my prior post. It went through its process, but after the
sync, instead of having the same 40-50 unread articles from before
(plus any new ones that had come in since my last sync), I was left
with no articles after the sync. It said no articles.

I then checked Google Reader and it said no unread articles, but when
I click into Lifehacker feed, as you can see there are many bold/
unread articles from today.

Went through my settings on NewsRob:
Sync Type: Keep and Sync Unread Only
Auto Sync disabled
Offline use enabled
Download Content Default:feed content
Storage provider: SD card
Capacity: 1000
Confirm Mark All Read: 50
Enable notifications off for all

I am 100% positive that I did not hit Mark All Read on the home page
before doing the manual sync. There were definitely still 40-50 there
(including the Lifehacker feed) when I started the manual sync.

Hopefully it is just a quick fix. Other than this, I really like the
addition of only syncing the unread articles... I just hope that it
keeps my unread ones.

Any thoughts...

Can anybody else contribute to this?

I am baffled. Yes, bold articles should be unread (for all I know), but it says "0 new items". I have no idea why this happens?! Did you try to logout on the webapp and login again? Could you also clear your browser cache in between?

This doesn't happen when you set "Keep And Sync All Articles"?

So, NewsRob shows you that you have no articles left after a sync?

When you go to the options menu does it say "Hide read" or "Unhide read"?

I did it logged out and the same thing happens. Also clearing the
browser cache they still show as unread. Also, the NewRob sync is not
keeping the unread articles on the phone either when I do the manual
sync. It is like the program is choosing to mark all on the phone as
read and then remove them from the phone during the next update, even
though they were never opened.

>

Tested switching it back and it does not do it. The read articles are
marked read and the non-read are marked non-read.

Yes

After doing the update, when it says that no articles are left, it
says that regardless of whether I have read articles hid or not.
Before I run the manual update, there are different numbers based on
which ones are still unread vs. the total number from the last update.

Austin,

thanks for hanging in there  ...

I am still not quite sure why the webapp shows articles in bold, but counts them read, but as there now is a symptom we can hunt on the phone itself (no articles left after sync), I will focus on that first. The funny thing is that I am not ware that I changed anything in the up-direction (mark as read for example).

But lets take a breath. The current version has the sync disabled. I will start working on the new sync again, but it will take a little time. I have vacation from the 14th of December and I think I will give it another shot then.

We would need to enable logging to find out what's going on. I will give you detailed instructions how to enable logging. You use Windows, right?

Cheers,
Mariano

Thanks Austin, I will.

Good news is that the other reported bug that I was kind of afraid of turned out to be more of a cosmetic issue that I also believe to have a solution for. So I will not postpone resuming the work on this for long.

I will let you know.

Sorry, that some of your articles have accidentally marked a read!

Mariano,

I hate to say it, but even after reverting to the other version of
3.3.0 (without the feature that only syncs unread articles), I am
still having that issue where the manual update is marking everything
as read. This also happened yesterday, but I didn't have time to send
this email or grab screen shot for you.

Tonight, I did a manual update around 5pm, and had about 650 unread
articles on my phone and on Google Reader (they matched). I went
through most of the feeds on NewsRob and starred what I want to read
later and marked others as read. I skipped a few feeds, and when I
was done looking at what I wanted to on the phone, I had about 150
unread articles still showing in NewsRob and Google Reader showed
about 800 unread (the 650 from before my least update plus another 150
that had come in since 5pm). I then did a manual update on NewsRob.

After NewsRob went through the update, it showed me a screen that said
I had no unread articles. The 150 that were left over from the
original 650 were marked unread, and also the new 150 that had come in
since 5p were also added to the phone and marked as read. I then
logged back into Google Reader and it shows no unread articles. (By
the time I grabbed the screen shot two new ones did come in).

As you will see in the screenshot, the AP feed shows that I have no
unread articles in the sidebar or at the top menu, but there are six
articles that are still bold, which I have not yet read. (These are
all ones that came in after that 5pm update).

http://twitpic.com/qtf3f

I have checked through all of the settings and can't find anything
that would do this. Do you think it is a problem with the manual
update? Should I try it with a scheduled update and see if it does
the same thing.

Let me know if you want to give me instructiions for the debugging
script.

Austin,

I really hate to hear that. I must be troublesome to be in your shoes. Sorry for that.

I don't have the faintest idea what's happening. NewsRob itself doesn't do any mass marks, but only marks individual articles. So it is really strange how it marked the other 150 articles as read as it doesn't seem to have known the ids of those articles.
Hopefully the log will tell us more.

(a) Do you happen to use mark all read at all?
(b) To know where to start with the instructions to enable logging: Have you ever copied a file to your Android's device sd card?

Cheers,
Mariano

I use the "Mark All Read" all the time for individual feeds. However,
it is always within a feed. I usually skim through the headlines,
opening about 10% to either read the summary or star the article and
then mark the remaining headlines (that were of no interest) as read.
I then go back and read all the starred articles.

I am happy to load the debugger. I know how to hook up the USB cable
and mount the device so that the SD card shows up on my computer to
drag and drop files. I also have a file manager app on the Droid, if
that makes a difference. Just let me know what you would like me to
do.

Thanks

Austin

PS - Another feature I just thought of that would be cool, would be
the ability to star an article from the headline list. On the mobile
GR interface you can do this That would all starring without opening
the article.

Ok, superb, I will release a newer version in a couple of hours with more logging enabled.

An older version of NewsRob had the star button also in the list view. The problem is that it takes up much space and so I hide it in the list view.
I know this is not the same thing, but are you aware that you can long click on the article and star it from the context menu?

Hi Austin,

have you got the new version of NewsRob? Version 331? I specifically added some more debug output to solve this sync issue that is haunting you and me.

(a) To start from a clean slate, could you please use "Clear Cache".

(b) I attached a file (newsrob.debug) that I would like you to copy to the root of your SD card. The root directory is the top level directory of your SD card and the one you immediately see when you click on the "volume"/disk on your Mac.

(c) Afterwards NewsRob needs to be restarted. The simplest way to do that is to reboot your phone.

(d) After it's booted up, please run a manual sync.

Now do what you do to provoke the bug and take careful note of what you're doing and possibly at what time you do it, so that we can correlate it to the log that is now created.

When the bug has happened, please post the log here. You will find it on the SD card in the root directoy But wait, please send it to marian...@gmail.com first. I am 99% sure that it will not contain any personal data, but let me just quickly look over it and then I will let you know to post it here.

What you said so far was exactly what I saw on the screenshots (as weird as it originally sounded ;-) Hence there is no need to take screenshots anymore. It doesn't look that we have a communications issue ;-)

Hey Austin,

are you still there? ;-)

I would feed very uncomfortable to release the new sync without getting some closure on this issue.

If you need help with something let me know. If you're just busy, thats fine too, but please let me know also.

Cheers,
Mariano
