Is it possible for NewsRob to auto scale the images to fit to screen
while reading an article so that we don't have to scroll sideways
(like on web based version accessed from the phone)

Yeah that would be pretty nice. I've seen apps like Bratag's Craigslist Checker that have their own built-in browser too, which loads way faster than the actual browser and doesn't make you leave the application to see web content. This would be great as well, though somewhat unrelated to the question asked.

Hey Grabiarz, I will put it on my list of feature candidates. I have to say though that it doesn't has such a high prio as compared to other features, say the notifications. Because I think the lack of notification is hurting more than the occasional scrolling. What is puzzling me a bit is why this is an issue at all. Maybe I don't really understand it. In my feeds this happens once a day that I have to scroll sideways - and I am a photographer and am subscribed to lots of photo heavy blogs. Can you give me an example blog that you have this problem with? I will subscribe to it to get a better feel about "what you are going through" :-) I guess you are aware that there is a "web" view and a "feed" view in NewsRob, right? You can toggle between them by tapping on the article header on the Show Article screen. You want the re-sizing for the feed view, don't you? Cheers, Mariano

Hey Jonno, not sure if I can follow you. Bratag's Craigslist checker is an Android app? And it down-sizes images? And you don't have to leave NewsRob to open the actual web page. You can just tap on the article header to switch to the "web" view. And if you like to have this as a default for a particular feed you can set this via the "Manage Feed" option: http://newsrob.blogspot.com/2009/04/newsrob-19-preview-more-download.html Does this do what you are asking for? Cheers, Mariano

Well it's not an issue or a problem per se but rather a matter of
aesthetics. Gizmodo (gizmodo.com) is one website that usually includes
images with their articles and I think it'd be nice if the images were
scaled to fit to screen. I see how with photography blogs you might
not want to resize images to fit to screen to see better details. I'm
not sure what kind of load the resizing would induce on the phone,
since maybe possibly the web based Google Reader is offloading it onto
the server? And yes I'd like there to be re-sizing in the feed view.

OT: Btw, I'm not sure what are your plans for future of this
application, and I understand how developing it in your spare time has
its impact. However, have you thought about opening up the source
code? I'm a Java AD myself, albeit fresh out of school but one
nonetheless, and I'd love to contribute. Although my contributions
would be limited by my free time as well, which I don't have a lot of,
but maybe there'd be more people willing to add since your app has,
going by the market numbers, 5000-10000 downloads.

Bratag is an Android dev, I use a lot of his apps for examples because he includes great features in them.  Search Bratag in Market and d/l his Craigslist app and search for something and open the resulting page. You'll see what I mean, it's pretty nice. It's like a mini-browser/html-viewer embedded into his app. I like your web view, but it's just a column for most of my feeds, it doesn't show the web page, it's more like a full view of the feed contents, as opposed to the header. Which is also useful, but for some of my feeds the website is good enough I would want to see all the stuff surrounding the feed contents, but without having to open the browser app. My phone crashes all the time and I can't take another open app =/

Also I never knew there were two views, and I barely noticed the button at top left to change it until now. Maybe throw some color on that little guy? And make it a glossy button or something that matches your layout.

Hey,

I subscribed to gizmodo and I'll feed back later. So the web based
version does that... Interesting. I will look into that too.

Regarding your question of open sourcing NewsRob. No, no plans to do
that. But I haven't made up my mind on what do with NewsRob in the
long run. I will spent some time thinking about that at the end of the
year.

Just as a side note. OSS is not the only option to collaborate and
to free me up to have more time to code. E.g. Matt helps testing the
app. And another user started out to help with the marketing of
NewsRob and created a test video. That efforts unfortunately petered
out, so that I will have to do the videos myself, but it is still
another example of what can be done without making NewsRob open
source.

For your particular feature request. If you can built a stand alone
prototype that demonstrates how the down sizing could work it would
greatly improve the odds that it gets into NewsRob. (or another
Reader app). You can make that OSS btw.

In any case. Thanks for your interest in NewsRob and following up.

Cheers,
Mariano

Ok, I am downloading the craigslist checker as I write. I will see
then what is the difference to NewsRob's "web"/"feed" view.

Yes, it is unfortunately not very discoverable that there is a "web"
view and a "feed" view. I think we'll have another thread here soon
about the UI.

Ok, tried the craigslist checker now. I attached a screenshot. Do you mean that dialog? That is the same thing NewsRob uses, but NewsRob doesn't have the window decoration around and I think that's a good thing as it eats up precious screen real estate.

Or am I missing the point here? I am also not sure what you mean with the column view? NewsRob has those two modes "web" and "feed". The former shows the actual web page, like if you would click on the article header in Google Reader - just without leaving the app, and the latter shows only the feed content including the images – just like what you see in Google Reader.

For some reason google groups seem to have removed the screenshot from my mail or can anbyody see it.

Anyway, the 2nd screenshot in this review also shows the "mini browser".

Great, glad we are no the same page now. I have to say though, that I
am also not happy with the discoverability of the two view modes. More
about that during the next days.

Yeah, just give it some color or gloss or something, it's hidden in plain view.

Grabiarz,

I subscribed to Gizmodo and Engadget and see what you mean. I have to say so that the annoyance level quickly goes to about zero when I rotate the phone into landscape orientation.

I also checked the Google Reader mobile web interface. Yes, it seems to down-scale the image and it looks very slick. I am not sure if I can do it just this way, but I would certainly try. I like in particular the extra link to show the image in full size. Maybe I will use JavaScript to do that. I haven't given the implementation much thought so far.

I still don't see it as a high prio item though and I am keen to go on vacation, so it could take months. On the bright side it seems that Greed is doing scaling from today on: http://fognl.blogspot.com/2009/05/greed-update-scaled-images.html

Just don't get this the wrong way, I don't want to see you go at all ;-), but depending on how important this feature is too you, this might be an alternative?

Cheers,
Mariano

Thanks for consideration, and I do understand that this is nowhere
near P1 issue, but I'm glad you see my point. Hopefully it'll make it
to newsrob eventually and in the meantime I'll try and do some
research on my own as to how to do it efficiently and when I stumble
upon something I'll forward it to you.
