#600,000 PARTNERSHIP PLAN BREAKS DOWN INDEPENDENT/STATE SCHOOL
BARRIERS

Pupils from state and independent schools are joining together in a
revolutionary new scheme to help break down traditional barriers and
in doing so raise standards in schools.

And today (15 May 1998) School Standards Minister Stephen Byers will
announce 48 projects specifically funded to forge strong links
between historic independent schools such as Wells Cathedral School,
in rural Somerset, and bustling inner city comprehensives, like St
George's Community School, in Bristol.

Mr Byers said: '#600,000 will be made available to schools throughout
England, #350,000 from the Department for Education and Employment
and #250,000 from The Sutton Trust.

'There has been an overwhelming response to the initiative. We
received nearly 300 applications, seeking more than #5.5m in grant,
and a large number were worthy of support. That is why we have added a
further #100,000 to the initial #500,000 we announced in November
1997. Each one of the 48 successful projects clearly demonstrates how
independent and state schools can work together to enhance the
educational opportunities of pupils from the schools involved. A
total of 11,000 pupils will benefit from the initiative.'

'Old divisions have to be put to one side if we are serious about
learning from what works well. Our commitment to raising standards
is paramount.

'This is a modern, forward-looking government which values education
and recognises how vital it is for the well-being of our country.
Independent and state schools have much to learn from each other.'

Mr Byers stressed: 'In the past there has been co-operation, but
rarely in the area of academic work.'

The projects, spread throughout England, will tackle a wide range of
activities to bring independent and state school sector pupils
together. The subjects include numeracy, literacy, science, sport,
art, music, technology, modern foreign languages and special needs.

Mr Byers said: 'There is a tremendous variation contained within the
projects; some involve two schools working together, clusters of
schools, inner city, rural and urban projects.

'We thank the Sutton Trust, and its chairman Peter Lampl, for their
financial support for a scheme which will bring pupils from all walks
of life closer together and bury old prejudices.'

Peter Lampl said: 'The Sutton Trust is very encouraged by the
response from both the independent and state sector to co-operate at
grass roots level. We are delighted to jointly fund the selected
projects and the Trust is looking at funding a number of the other
projects which were submitted.'

Mr Byers added: 'I am also publishing today the interim report of the
Advisory Group on Independent/State School Partnerships and my
response to it. I am grateful to the Group for its work so far on
this important issue and look forward to receiving the final report
in July.'
