* FLORIDA PANTHERS

Finally. The Panthers finally put an end to their club-record
13-game losing streak and their 15-game winless skid with a 5-4
victory over Montreal Thursday. ... It was Florida's first win
since January 31st and also stopped a six-game home losing
slide. ... G Kirk McLean, acquired from Carolina on Tuesday, won
in his Florida debut. ... The Panthers scored more than three
goals for only the second time in their last 29 games. ... C
Dave Gagner has three goals and two assists in his last six
games.


* NEW JERSEY DEVILS

Martin Brodeur continues to assert himself as one of the top two
goaltenders in the game, right behind Buffalo's Dominik Hasek.
Brodeur recorded his ninth shutout of the season with a 2-0
blanking of Colorado Thursday. ... Brodeur has three shutouts in
his last six starts, boosting his career total to 31. He leads
the league with 41 wins and improved his lifetime mark against
the Avalanche franchise to 9-1-3. Brodeur is six wins shy of
tying Bernie Parent's all-time single-season record of 47 set in
the 1973-74 season. ... New Jersey has two power-play goals in
each of its last three games, going 6-for-20 in that span.


* NEW YORK ISLANDERS

The Islanders got contributions from some new faces in their 4-3
victory over Pittsburgh Thursday. The win was just the second in
nine games for the Isles, who are barely alive in the playoff
race. ... New York improved to 20-0-6 when leading after two
periods and 4-13 in one-goal games. ... D Vladimir Chebaturkin
had two assists for his first NHL points, while RW Jason Dawe,
acquired from Buffalo on Tuesday, scored his first goal with the
Isles. ... With Ds Scott Lachance, Bryan Berard and J.J.
Daigneault out with injuries, D Jeff Libby was recalled from
Kentucky and made his NHL debut. The Islanders started the game
with 19 players before Libby arrived. ... C Trevor Linden has
six goals and five assists in 13 games with the Isles after
collecting seven goals and 14 assists in 42 games with
Vancouver.


* NEW YORK RANGERS

After Wednesday's overtime loss to the Ottawa, the Rangers
playoff hopes were hurt very badly. But with a 4-1 loss in
Carolina Thursday, they're done. ... New York has lost four
straight overall and five in a row on the road. ... C Wayne
Gretzky was held pointless, ending his six-game points streak.
.. RW Alexei Kovalev scored, giving him six goals and five
assists in his last seven games. ... G Mike Richter has allowed
16 goals during the four-game losing streak.


* PHILADELPHIA FLYERS

After a 3-0-2 start under Roger Neilson, the Flyers have lost
three of their last four games, including Thursday's 4-2 setback
in Boston. ... Philadelphia seemed secure in third place in the
East but the Bruins have moved within six points of the Flyers.
... D Dan McGillis, acquired from Edmonton Tuesday, made his
Flyers debut and picked up an assist. ... RW Mike Sillinger has
quietly made an impact on the Flyers since he was acquired
from Vancouver with seven goals and seven assists in 15 games.


* TAMPA BAY LIGHTNING

The Lightning may have had thoughts of catching Florida to avoid
the worst record in the NHL but the Panthers won Thursday and
Tampa Bay fell in St. Louis, 3-2. ... The Bolts own the league's
worst record (16-45-9) and have dropped five of six on the road.
... RW Stephane Richer picked up an assist in the loss, giving
him nine goals and 12 assists in 24 games with Tampa Bay. ...
Tampa Bay has lost six of seven games in St. Louis, where they
have not won since October 13th, 1992. ... G Mark Fitzpatrick
made his 24th straight start.


* WASHINGTON CAPITALS

With a 3-2 loss in Calgary Thursday, the Capitals dropped into a
tie with Montreal and Buffalo for fifth in the East. ...
Washington has lost six of its last seven road games and the
first three contests on its four-game road trip, which concludes
Saturday in Vancouver. ... The Caps have scored two goals or
less in eight straight games. ... C Adam Oates has three goals
and eight assists in his last 10 games. ... In an effort to
bolster an offense that relies mostly on one line, the Caps
signed former 50-goal scorer Brian Bellows, who had been playing
with the Berlin Capitals of the German professional league.

The Bruins won for the fifth time in six games with a 4-2
victory over Philadelphia Thursday. Boston, which also has won
four in row at home, stands alone in fourth place in the East,
six points behind the third-seeded Flyers. ... The goaltending
duo of Rob Tallas and Byron Dafoe has combined to allow just
eight goals in the last six games. ... Boston is 2-0-1 against
the Flyers this season and 5-1-1 in its last seven home games
with them.


* BUFFALO SABRES

Buffalo erupted for five third-period goals in a 5-2 victory
over Vancouver Thursday. The Sabres moved a season-high five
games over .500 and was their third win in four games. ... G
Steve Shields gave Dominik Hasek a night off and responded with
21 saves to improve to 2-0-1 in his last three starts. ...
Buffalo won for just the second time in 29 games when trailing
after two periods (2-21-6). ... D Alexei Zhitnik has three goals
and five assists in his last nine games.


* CAROLINA HURRICANES

Carolina dumped the reeling Rangers, 4-1, Thursday to move into
sole possession of ninth place in the East, five points behind
eighth-place Ottawa. ... The Hurricanes improved to just 2-5-2
in its last nine home games. ... C Keith Primeau has two goals
and two assists in four games against the Rangers this season.
He also has three goals and two assists in his last two
contests. ... RW Ray Sheppard, acquired from Florida on Tuesday,
picked up an assist in his Hurricanes debut.


* MONTREAL CANADIENS

Montreal finished its Florida road trip with a 5-4 loss to the
Panthers Thursday. ... The Canadiens have lost four of their

OTTAWA SENATORS

C Alexei Yashin had just one shot on goal Wednesday, but it was
the game-winner as he scored with 1:49 to play in Ottawa's 3-2
overtime win over New York. The Senators lead the Hurricanes by
five points for the final playoff spot. ... LW Randy Cunneyworth
had two assists in the win for his first multi-assist game since
December 27th. ... G Damian Rhodes was leveled behind his own
net by New York's Kevin Stevens with 13 seconds remaining in
regulation. Rhodes stayed in the game and made a juggling save
on Wayne Gretzky's flip from the right side with 2.8 seconds to
play. .. The Senators snapped a five-game road losing streak and
improved to 13-9-3 against the Atlantic Division.


* PITTSBURGH PENGUINS

Pittsburgh suffered just its second loss in seven games (4-2-1)
overall with a 5-4 setback to the Islanders Thursday but is
0-4-1 in its last five road contests. ... C Ron Francis' assist
on D Kevin Hatcher's second goal moved him into a tie with Bryan
Trottier for ninth on the all-time scoring list with 1,425
points. ... RW Jaromir Jagr had an assist in the loss, giving
him a league-leading 90 points, five better than Colorado's
Peter Forsberg.
