This depends mostly on how much RAM you have. Xnews stores all the
headers in RAM, and it needs roughly 1 free GB per million headers.
Also, threading all those headers after download requires RAM and
CPU time. If I were you, I'd experiment by increasing the number of
headers you grab at a time to find out what the threshold is on your
machine.

I'm all for this method too. But I'm at a loss as to where in Xnews you
can "set" or limit the number of headers to DL. At least on a permanent
basis. I know you can right-click onto a group name and choose "Open
Special" or type [Ctrl+Enter] for the "Open Special" dialog, to grab
xxxx headers. But nowhere to do this and set as a default header count
to DL at any time, AFAIK. (no big deal, I'm happy with "Ctrl+Enter")

Duh, I just noticed "Incremental Retrieval (Optional)- Limit to.." in
"Open Special" dialog. I guess this is where it gets set.
I've only been using Xnews for about 3 years on a regular basis. Double
duh.

Well, it is an undocumented advanced feature, after all...
Try this:
Suppose that if a group contains more than 20000 posts, you would
like to read it in batches of 10000. In that case, before running
Xnews, you would edit the [Xover] section of Xnews.ini to contain:
[XOVER]
PromptThreshold=20000
LimitPerGet=10000
AutoFree=1
Now, whenever you attempt to open a group that has more than 20000
posts, a window will automatically pop up labeled "Set number of
headers to retrieve". The sliders should already be set correctly
and all you have to do is place a check-mark in front of "Limit to"
in the Incremental retrieval section. The number will be pre-set to
10000 (the "LimitPerGet" entry, above). Make sure the "free old
headers" box is also checked. Then hit the return or check OK.
Xnews will then download the next 10000 articles. When you are done
with those, simply hit the F5 key (or click on the icon of a sheet
with two green semi-circular arrows on bottom bar) ( or Group -->
Refresh Headers). Xnews will ask you to confirm that you want to
delete existing headers (to save memory). Simply click "Yes", and
the existing headers will be cleared and the next 10000 headers will
be loaded. Continue until you finish reading the group. When done,
you can do a "F8" or "Catchup" to only read new articles next time
you open the group.
Simply change the [Xover] numbers to suit your needs.

John

So 2 questions then; if I make the chasnge to Xnews.ini as per
your post I will still get all available posts above the limit,
if I want to by selecting refresh headers or something? And; My
Xnews.ini now reads, in part
[XOVER]
LimitPerGet=40000
AutoFree=1
[Metrics]
I should just change everything above [Metrics] to
[XOVER]
PromptThreshold=20000
LimitPerGet=10000
AutoFree=1
Thanks JW,
Dr. Dan

Yes. You will get all of the posts but just 10000 at a time (with
the example limits shown). Feel free to pick the numbers for
PromptThreshold and LimitPerGet that work best for you. Since you
already have LimitPerGet and AutoFree, just add a line for
PromptThreshold. PromptThreshold should be larger or the same as
LimitPerGet.
