  The quotes (&amp;quot;) cause a failure if used from within a running Lynx session. &lt;br&gt; Without the quotes, Lynx works very well, including to unusual ports and with &lt;br&gt; automatic authinfo prompting. &lt;br&gt; &lt;p&gt;However, as you show, the quotes are required if Lynx is started from a &lt;br&gt; terminal with the full URI. &lt;br&gt; &lt;p&gt;Lynx even follows the References M-IDs (select one and press &amp;lt;Enter&amp;gt;).

  Be careful of Thunderbird&#39;s display of References links. &lt;br&gt; &lt;p&gt;If you have more than one news server configured, you may find out that method &lt;br&gt; gives weird results. Like creating a new news server account called simply &lt;br&gt; &amp;quot;news&amp;quot; which is not a FQDN, and will get you nowhere. &lt;br&gt; &lt;p&gt;You also don&#39;t need Mnenhy to display these References links.

  Look up the utility called &amp;quot;zenity&amp;quot; if you want a GUI around the user &lt;br&gt; interaction. &lt;br&gt; &lt;p&gt;As a general rule, I&#39;d recommend getting all the parameters into your &lt;br&gt; script before it tries to contact the upstream server (or pass the &lt;br&gt; parameters to the tool that will actually perform the transaction).

  Thunderbird for Linux with Mnenhy add-on does it. It can search for &lt;br&gt; news articles by MID locally, remote server, and newsgroups at Google. &lt;br&gt; &lt;p&gt;Besides that, at the bottom of headers field in opened articles it also &lt;br&gt; displays clickable references and a message-id (all expandable), just &lt;br&gt; like in the good old pre-AOL Netscape.

  Pan can&#39;t either. Haven&#39;t found anything resembling finding articles using &lt;br&gt; a Message-ID. &lt;br&gt; &lt;p&gt;Anyone tried Thunderbird?
