Hmm, I found another place said to rename it from .exe to .zip and that
worked. I want a stable version: http://www.nfilter.org/download.html

Well, I did try the newer version; it doesn't have a setup so I copied
the files over to where it was already setup & it's having a problem
reading the nfilter.dat file.
The apparent solution below makes no sense, I have no idea where the N
is changed to n. There is no such thing in NewsProxy.ini or nfilter.dat

Now I've copied over the original .exe and it opens a different
mysterious nfilter.dat and won't let me save changes, complaining:
Cannot create the nfilter.dat file.
Make sure the path & filename are correct.
I also get the message on startup:
FCF:1FD8 Ignoring bad entry 'filter.dat' line : 2 =
Even uninstalling & reinstalling the old np-120.zip/exe doesn't fix this
issue.

Ah, that was a blank line I added which caused the error. I still can't
save the nfilter.dat that it loads from the edit menu and it loads the
wrong one. Supposedly I have it set up but not seeing any effect.
Thunderbird is set to server 'localhost' and NewsProxy is set to my
server & everything runs as normal.

Thanks, that may have been the explanation, I was using the shortcut in
the start menu but I deleted & uninstalled it all. For some reason it
left Thunderbird unable to post new messages... "article header missing"
although I can reply. This just isn't worth the hassle.

...but the edit menu loads the file in this folder:

Alright, I've actually got it working and filtering google groups
messages now, I see them in the log. I just have to edit the nfilter.dat
in program files manually rather than from the edit menu.
I'm still unable to start new threads but oh well I guess I don't do
that very often.

Wait...is the issue that the copy at newsproxy home is a mis-extensioned
zip that's called an exe? Or am I confusing the various reports I've read
here? If that's the case, would just getting the official file and
changing the extension solve the issue? I'd archive that, if that's the
case -- I trust it more than something from a warez site.

It's a self-extracting zip, so the extension is right. But there's a
missing byte, so the self-extraction bits don't work. The files that
would be self-extracted are still ok though, which is why external
unpackers work.

Yeah, that'll work. There will still be the useless self-extraction
code in there, but it shouldn't affect anything other than bandwidth.
Alternatively, you could extract the files then just repack them
yourself, which would have the benefit of giving users a file not
corrupt in any way.

It is a self-installing zip as »Q« says.
Use a hex editor and append a null byte to the end to make the
file size up to 692736 bytes.

I think I'm both less and more confused now. :)
Are the files in the zip all ready to go, like Xnews distributions -- all
they need is to be extracted into a directory, with no other installation
needed? Extract to ...\foo and run an exe that's in there?
So you're suggesting just extracting everything and zipping them (in a
normal zip file) for distribution -- and that will fix the problem?

There is a setup.exe file in it, and a whole bunch more junk than the
few files that go into the Program Files folder.

IIRC, Paul is right that one of the files is setup.exe, so the user
will need to first extract the archive then run the setup to install.
I don't know if some of the files could just be copied to get a working
app as with Xnews.

Blinky - I had the same problem extracting the nfilter programs using
the self-extractor program. I unzipped it with 7-zip into it's own
folder and ran the nstall program. Works well (but I had problems
with NOrton giving everything access)>

The warezFAQ is not a warez site, unless somethings have very muched
changed, IIRC it grew from l.newbie.school (and a few other groups) when
it was hosted on many home computers and not part of UUnet and there were
very few bin files in usenet, and to 'try' teach the users the correct way
to move up into the zoo.
Also a well secured box has nothing to fear from a website.

Perhaps they should reconsider their name, then. Similarly, if one has a
non-pr0n site, it probably shouldn't include "titsandass" in the domain's
name.

edits to load.

Do I take it that someone's using NewsProxy and Dialog at the same time to

Maybe you (or I) wouldn't use Newsproxy personally, but for those who wish
to use programs that they feel comfortable with but they don't possess
good filtering capabilities, Newsproxy really does help preserve their
sanity, while attempting to use usenet (at this point in time of mass
spammer, sporge, etc; attacks).
Its not a bolt on tool, it is a proxy news server.

No, that is not quite right. NewsProxy AND Dialog are capable of
filtering on any overview header when retrieving headers, but for
non-overview headers needs - news server support is required.
If *you* are able to filter on headers outside of XOVER while using
Dialog as you DL headers it is because your news server allows you to.
Just the same as NewsProxy OR Dialog OR Xnews OR SLRN OR Pan etc, etc...
