A permanently deleted newsgroup in XNews

This is a weird one.

I rarely download binaries, but when I do, I use Xnews.

I was checking out the group alt.binaries.boneless . I stupidly deleted
the group from my list (I was confused and thought I was clearing all
the headers, resetting everything back to how it was before I opened
it). I have absolutely no idea how to get it back!

I even "uninstalled" and "reinstalled" XNews (deleting the directory and
associated registry keys, and then unzipping the .zip file) *twice*. The
second time, I even deleted the associated Prefetch files. There is
something in memory somewhere because that group continues to be
missing!

Can someone please explain what is happening? I can always restore an
image, but I'd like to fix this silly problem without doing that.
Granted, this is a small issue, but it's really bothering me!

Suggestion: refresh the newsgroup list.

OTOH, my servers don't seem to carry boneless, but maybe that's because
it's binary and perhaps they don't do binary.

I think I meant to say *reload* (from scratch) the newsgroup list :-)

You did not state you attempted to (re) *subscribe* to the group. Did
you?

I downloaded *all* the group names. The name alt.binaries.boneless
didn't appear on the list. If it appeared, I could subscribe to it. :-)

The group alt.binaries.boneless does exist, BTW. And my news service
does carry it. I can get new posts from this group via Outlook Express
(not that OE is a good program to use for binaries!).

I played around with the "Add group manually" command. It then *appears*
as a subscribed group (but I doubt I am truly subscribed to it). But
when I try anything -- open special, catch up, get message count -- all
that happens is this message:

Bits index out of range.

Simple: Group->get entire grouplist

When you have the server in question. Then just resubscribe. You will have
to get headers again of course.

I am sorry that I forgot to state this in my original post, but I did
try just that!

To manually add a group, hit Insert at the Groups List. Type in the
group name at the prompt.

You sorted the groups by name, had it showing all groups (as opposed to
just the subscribed ones (with the "all" button), clicked on the *very*
first group in that list and then did a group search for "boneless" with
no matches? all those are required to prove that the server doesn't have
the group name listed. This is different from the group not being carried
however.

The group is carried.

I played around with the "Add group manually" command. It then appears

The "Bit index out of range" error is a symptom of Article Numbers
exceeding 2^31. The only way around this in Xnews is to use the
"Test-64.zip" version of Xnews under the "Test Versions" link. I
believe that this will fix this problem but it breaks Queue Folders for
many people. (Pick your poison).

Get the latest version of Xnews. The one that you see in these headers. It
*isn't* a beta or "test" release really. Lu writes xnews for himself, so
there is no real development cycle. He just ocassionally releases a
version.

The group list is stored as plain text in .newsrc files in the Xnews
folder. Look for a group entry there.

Instead of downloading the whole group list again, use ctrl + insert to
create a new group entry.

Double check you're not somehow using your old Xnews program in its folder
