Feeding Usenet news to email

I've seen mention that cnews can be used to send nntp to e-mail:

but I can't find cnews in Ubuntu, so I'm wondering whether it's obsolete.

I've been using leafnode but might switch to inn for this functionality.

What I'm looking for is to send nntp messages to e-mail, just one way. I
don't need a full gateway such as gmane, just one way is sufficient.

Currently I'm using dovecot-postfix in Ubuntu with leafnode (http://
leafnode.sourceforge.net/ )as the nntp server. What would be involved in
setting inn to e-mail a newsgroup, or is there a better tool?

Mostly. C News development has stopped in the mid-nineties, and most
sites will have switched to INN.

No problem at all with INN. There is a script packaged with INN to do
that: see
<http://www.eyrie.org/~eagle/software/inn/docs-2.5/news2mail.html>.

You can even couple mailing list software like Mailman with any NNTP
server. Mailman can pull news from Usenet and send it out to a mailing
list, feeding mails from the list back to Usenet.

Gating "official" newsgroups both ways is not a good idea, though.

Excellent, thanks for the link.

Incidentally, I'm on Ubuntu and using Leafnode; unfortunately, inn
conflicts with leafnode according to the package manager.

Is there some trick to running them concurrently? I'm not quite sure
that I want to switch.

cnews still provides a nice lightweight nntp server. INN was overkill
for my small office and so it got replaced by cnews about a decade ago.
It seems that cnews source is still available at:

ftp://ftp.cs.toronto.edu/pub/c-news/c-news.tar.Z

The compile process is fairly easy. Proper installation is a bit
harder.
