I can't reply to a thread that has lots of periods in the subject header...
such as "Re: A.M.R. M.I.A." I don't know if the issue is Outlook Express or
something in the news service I use (Giganews.) Can anyone figure out where
the source of such a glitch would be?

When you say you can't reply to such a thread, what do you mean? Is the
followup rejected by the news server? Are you trying to make an email
reply or a newsgroup followup? Do you get an error message? If so,
what exactly is the error message?

One way to check would be to use a different newsreader and see if the
same thing happens.
