Lemme guess -- you hand-edited your .newsrc, right?
The newsrc is a bunch of lines like
news.group.name 1,5-10,1004-3443

I'd guess you stuck a carriage return here. Probably your text editor
did it because the line was longer than 80 characters. Get a better
text editor.
