Thank you, all, for testing Google Groups while the product was on
Google Labs and providing detailed feedback. Over the past few weeks we
have rolled out several updates and changes to Google Groups, many
based on the threads posted in this group. Most of the new changes can
be found in the press release, but here are some of the new features:
- A new directory structure to find all Usenet groups
- Advanced search
- Sort by date in search results
- Email address masking
- New user interface [...]''
The product seems to be rather different to the one they beta-tested - and
so far response has not been terribly positive - as far as I can tell.

ATTN Google
if you are reading this - you need to display people's email addresses
on their posts
ATTN anyone who hates the new Google Groups
the old one is still available at google.co.uk

The day Google jumped the shark ?
Are they evil yet ?

They only hide the e-mail addresses..not the IP addresses. For a while they
were hiding the IP, but that was changed months ago. That have, however,
turned of the feature that would bring up a user's posting history if you
clicked his name or handle. Some people consider that to be a very useful
feature. Other find it to be to invasive of their privacy, go figure..they
are posting to Usenet.

Umm, no. Google is quite Akamaized, so you'll generally hit a server
near you. When I try www.google.co.uk from my Milwaukee colo box, I
get 50ms ping times, which is definitely not transatlantic. From
Google corp in the Bay Area it's under 1ms -- definitely not going to
the UK.

Thanks! That's good to know.

That one puts more traffic on the transantlantic internet and
loads down the UK server. Here is a better URL:
http://www.google.com/grphp?hl=en&tab=wg&q=
All of the "national" versions of Google are just aliases. Picking a
different one may change the user interface, but nothing much else.
Notice that the ads you see are always tailored for your own location.

Mail to the addresses given in the headers is no longer being
read. To mail me, substitute "clara.co.uk" for "freeuk.com".
Thanks! Updated my alias.

Once the realization is accepted that even between the closest human
beings infinite distances continue to exist, a wonderful living side by
side can grow up, if they succeed in loving the distance between them
which makes it possible for each to see each other whole against the
sky.
