By sequencing the DNA of nearly 40 ancient skeletons found in the Mitelelbe Saale region of Germany, Australian scientists along with their international colleagues have suggested that the foundations of the modern European gene pool were laid down in the Neolithic era, between 4,000 and 2,000 BC.
