SYMPOSIUM DESCRIPTION
For the third time the CAOS-Symposium brings together surgeons
and technologists to provide state of the art and future innovations
in the rapidly evolving field of Computer Assisted Orthopaedic
Surgery. Emerging computer based technologies hold a great
potential for improving clinical outcome and will soon influence the
way we design, plan, simulate, and execute surgical approaches.

The objectives of the symposium are to present the most current
thinking on the impact of computer assisted surgical techniques on
the daily clinical and surgical routine, to educate surgeons in the
use of these techniques, and to promote a new partnership
between surgeons and technologists as a necessary basis for the
successful integration of computer assisted surgery systems.

The format at the meeting will consist of invited lectures presented
by an internationally recognized faculty as well as presentations of
submitted papers reviewed by a distinguished program committee.
Also featured will be live computer assisted surgeries in different
anatomical areas. This year the clinically oriented hands on
workshop about different CAOS techniques and systems will be
extented significantly, a unique educational experience for
practicing orthopaedic surgeons.

The symposium's format will provide ample opportunity for personal
interaction with faculty and other symposium participants.

In order to encourage research in the field of Computer Assisted
Orthopaedic Surgery, a prize of sfr. 3000 for the best paper of the
symposium will be given. A board of referees will make their
selection from all extended abstracts (see Abstract Submission
Guidelines). Papers must reach the CAOS-Secretary not later than
July 15, 1997. One of the authors should be prepared to come to
Bern at the time of the meeting to present the paper and to receive
the award.

ABSTRACT SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
Please apply the following guidelines for the submission of an
abstract to the 3rd CAOS-Symposium. Abstracts should be submitted as
hard copy and on floppy disc.

Content:
The abstract should reflect what is to be presented from the
podium. The abstract must be written in English intelligible to the
average reader, and the text should be substantive.
Length:
Abstracts in general should be 2 pages long. Extended abstracts for
the CAOS Award should be in the form of a complete report,
including illustrations and references not exceeding 10 pages.
References:
These are not usually necessary. They may be included if they do
not add to the length of the typed abstract.
Preparation and Typing:
The abstract should be written single spaced including title,
authors names, affiliations, and description of the work performed.
There should be no double space between the title and the text or
between paragraphs.
Put the title first, all in capital letters, using a 3 space
indentation for the first line only. Follow with the authors' names,
in capital and lower-case letters, and an address. Continue with the
description of the work performed outlining objective/background,
description of methods/systems, results, and conclusions. Each
paragraph should start with an appropriate header, e.g. INTRODUCTION,
MATERIALS AND METHODS, etc. which should be written in capital
letters.
If you use 8.5x11" paper please have a top, bottom, left, and right
margin of 1". If you use A4 format 210x297mm please have a top and
bottom margin of 34mm, but a left and right margin of 22mm. Times
Roman with a font size of 12pt should be used.
Do not use tables or graphs that are very small; they will be
impossible to read when the size of the page is reduced.
An example for an abstract in an abbreviated form is given below.

SAMPLE-ABSTRACT:

INTRODUCTION. Robotics and other computer-based tools are among emerging
technologies.
MATERIALS AND METHODS. The present approach is based on combining surgical
navigation techniques with interactive imaging.
RESULTS. The overall accuracy of the developed computer assisted surgical
technique was found to be better than 2mm.
CONCLUSIONS. In comparison to previously reported data the presented novel
approach significantly enhanced surgical accuracy and safety.
