What small systems?

Absolute zeros? Speak for yourself. Anyway, you do know that we don't
do this as part of our jobs, right? That anything I do or say here has
no relation to the company I work for? That I do this as myself, not
as a representative of that company, which is why, for example, I don't
post here under my work address? The company where I run a *top 10*
site, not one that is an "absolute zero"? The company where my system
is about as "big" as @Home's?
Or do you just not want to understand these things? We're not "sites",
we're just people.

And you still don't even begin to understand what is going on. No one

The masses don't understand why we don't just make sure that people

Hang around here for a while and see what the average Usenetter wants.

The only power being used is by the administrators/maintainers of the
systems that accept the UDP cancels. Said admins are well within
their rights to drop any and all packets they don't care for. The
concept is called 'private property'...
Usenet (and the internet in general) is a cooperative medium. @Home
was the first to be uncooperative, by letting their usenet spam
problem get so bad that a UDP was even seriously proposed, let alone
discussed and agreed upon (for certain values of "agreed upon").
[An aside to the NANAU crowd:]
You know, it seems like trolldom in general has taken a serious
decline in the past few years. I mean, I was in here when Boursy,
S.P., and the like were going full-tilt with their wild rambling rants
and general kookiness, back in late 97 (yes, I know they were around
before then... I wasn't, though, so I didn't see it).

My ambitions are simple -- I want to run a server for my friends and a
top 100 Freenix news site. Next week, I may get to start on my first
wish. I suspect the top 100 Freenix news site is more iffy.
Go to Dejanews and look up Becky Kearns. I'm tempted to say that I
want the both of you to have a nice long date where you and she
discuss Usenet in a car that's run out of gas about 40 miles from the
nearest phone.
+ Usenet (and the internet in general) is a cooperative medium. @Home

Not hardly. UUNet. Earthlink. Prodigy. AOL. All either threatened with
a cluestick beating, or given a cluestick beating. At least @Home had
the good sense to move forward.

Hey, you just can't UDP whitehouse.gov, you know. Besides, it was rude

The people screeching "First Amendment" and "Free Speech" would be

I was limiting the topic strictly to the proposed @Home UDP. I'm
aware other networks have had the UDP cluestick threatened or applied.
Perhaps that limitation was a bit too restrictive, but I had just
woken up about 10 minutes before that post. I wasn't, at that point,
mentally up to a broader viewpoint that encompassed all of usenet
history. :)

Up in the upper left corner is something called power search. Click
there, and you'll get a page that allows you to search by key words,
authors, date spans. Jeremy has an url that allow this same search
without the ads, but I've lost it since upgrading to a new OS. The
key words are news servers and the authors are me and Becky Kearns.
Enter them with no caps. Deja is a hideous interface for reading
news, but you really need to get some history here.
Post under -- always. Or I'll accuse you of being Dimitri Vulis.

Mr. Avenger,
If Usenet was run the way 'the people' seem to want it to be run, you
would have just lost your news access as a rabble-rousing troll. Be
verrrrrry careful what you wish for.

The company, you mean? By doing something about it, of course. I
don't do it personally; it's someone else's job.
Incidentally, I'm seeing some improvement here, in that you didn't
top-post this. I'm quite pleased. Now let's get to work on your
excessive quoting. You need to trim the bits you aren't replying

Of course not; it's their most useful service, so obviously they keep
it well-hidden. I think there's a tiny link on the main page that
says "power search", but it may be so small that you can't see it.

10 Dear netters,
11
12 As you all know by now, our erstwhile user Irochka <kos...@uxa.cso.uiuc.edu>
13 possesses an unusually large cunt which she uninhibitedly displays at the SCS
14 Conventions and which needs to be thoroughly fucked at least five times every
15 night. Obviously, her impotent husband "2-inch Greg" cannot satisfy Irochka,
16 even with his abnormally long tongue, so the Kosinovskys' family has imported
17 from Odessa a whole stable of studs with H1 work visas and at least 4" pricks
18 (considered very long for an Odessite), who fuck Irochka on alternate nights,
19 while Greg watches them and jerks off, as portrayed in Polanski's recent film
20 "Bitter Moon". Sometimes Igor Roshchin <rosh...@eehpx14.cen.uiuc.edu> fucks
21 Irochka's giant cunt, Alexander Bakharev <al...@polypro.me.uiuc.edu> fucks her
22 mouth, Pavel Slavin <pa...@ninja.life.uiuc.edu> screws her ass, Vadim Lvovich
23 <lvo...@uxa.cso.uiuc.edu> fucks her armpit and/or tits, or sometimes they'll
24 all rotate. Several of Irochka's fuckers have even posted articles onto SCS,
25 defending her charms and attacking her critics. No wonder Irochka herself no
26 longer has the time or inclination to read SCS! And what little she did post
27 invariably rotated around her vagina: her menstrual periods and Greg's habit
28 of eating her out, or her unimaginative sexual fantasies about mirrors in the
29 bedroom and vibrators. Unfortunately Irochka has tried to use her giant cunt
30 as a weapon, a shield of sorts, claiming that, because she possesses one, the
31 others had no right to insult her, even in self-defense, although she herself
32 had a right to flame them first and indeed utilized it constantly, viciously,
33 and without any provocation. Irochka's blatant hypocrisy was contrary to the
34 UIUC Acceptable Use Policy for Cunts described in RFC 822. So were Irochka's
35 commercial advertisements for "Conventions" asking for checks from attendees.
36 Recall that Irochka has been neither picked on nor discriminated against. On
37 the contrary, she has been treated fairly and flamed deservedly as would have
38 been any person irrespective of their gender abusing the net in the obnoxious
39 ways that Irochka had. Carrying a giant insatiable cunt between one's nicely
40 spread legs is not an excuse nor a mitigating circumstance for spreading lies
41 as wide as Irochka spreads her legs. If you don't want to be insulted, don't
42 start flaming others first, and you will be highly unlikely ever to be flamed
43 either. The aborigines like to say, if you can't stand the heat, stay out of
44 the kitchen. In Irochka's case, it's stay put in the kitchen, cooking borsch
45 for the next Convention. I remind its prospective attendees of UIUC safe sex
46 tip: to avoid contracting the whole bouquet of venereal diseases, wear three
47 or more layers of rubber condoms when you fuck Irochka at the SCS Convention.

Huh?
I said you were so gullible for an obvious troll.
What if I had posted your entire last post, and said ~'Hey, stop
posting my words out of context'? Your bullshit antenna would've
shot right up, right? So were was it for all those "omlette" posts?
Of course, it was obvious way before that: 'I've read 9000 posts in NANAU'
yet "omlette" (sic) is so clueless. One should learn from the past.
You humored "omlette 'you are NetCops, NetBullies, fascists, sue-able'"
for way too long. There should be a FAQ designed for such loons. Just
refer them to it. You just give them the attention they crave and feed from.

You do remember compulsive-obsessive SP, right?
>
> You do remember compulsive-obsessive SP, right?
Yes. That's why I don't like seeing someone flamed during a period as
tense as a wait on a UDP -- and by people who have no clues as to what
was going on, like you and Sam.
This past July, I met a woman who'd seen Stephen Boursy's *first* post
to ne.general regarding the rent strike. She said he was reasonable,
obviously a newbie (and as I've found out since, on disability for
depression). He got jumped. He jumped back. People tried to tell
him how to handle the flaming better, but unfortunately, he had a
history that made listening to them difficult. She didn't totally
defend Steve, but said, "They made him a monster."
SP also had psychological problems that were not his fault and people
here goaded him and counter trolled him -- I saw it. People made him
a monster.
And in *this* case, I know that omlette's first attempt to clean up
his comments got him ressurected, port scanned, his computer telnetted
to, his other posts here cancelled. It's no surprise, frankly, that
he saw this all as enemy action of a rather grievous sort. I trust
the people who did these things enough to say I do believe these were
all done due to misunderstandings, but why should he believe it so
quickly with all the people bashing at him?

Thank you for confirming that those who profess to do things for the good
of Usenet resort to the tactics you mentioned when someone offers an
opposing viewpoint! And you trust these people to do the right thing?
Misunderstanding my ass. They've show, and you've confirmed, their true
agenda.
Nope. I don't believe this. Others with much more raucous criticisms
of what has been done have not have these problems. These were
misunderstandings. And have been admitted to and apologized for even
though omlette is still not sure what he thinks was going on or how to
react to us.
A real start would be to factually answer the questions one at a time in
my new post to the newsgroup 'any chance for some sunshine in this
place'
But at the same time...
A call for a UDP is like the moon luring the loonies.
This is obviously one of the loons.
And omlette not only shows up on radar, it also shows up with cancel problems,
including these strange deals:

For the record: RR responded to one of the notifications I sent
saying that they didn't understand why I had targetted it, because
it didn't look like the usual rogue canceller/flooder spoor. At
the same time I was also getting email from David Ritz, Howard and at
least one other pointing out that my bot had misfired.
I have responded back to RR indicating that the cancels were in
error.
They didn't "intervene on his behalf", they emailed me for
clarification. Since it was obviously a mistake, I told them so,
and took steps to ensure it doesn't happen again.
Again my apologies.

No I can't fool myself - I don't think they have the decency to converse
with me over what they have done. Though I think it would be the
honorable thing to do.
With this said - Is what HipCrime and the HipClones do in 'rogue
cancels' illegal or raise any civil repercussions?
Or is it just a potential violation of the TOS and AUP of the ISP's they
go through? and all that could really happen is losing an Internet
account?
Could a potential peace be made between the Cabal and HipCrime or are
there circumstances outstanding that would prevent it even from
consideration? (without considering the desire of either party to even
want to do so) - technically is it possible?
Would a legal document be required to validate a reconciliation?
Or as in the UDP cancels just the server/sysadmins/ISP's going along
with it?

You haven't done your homework. This is what the archives are for.
Go to Deja or use Jeremy's search form at:

You can probably limit your search to news.admin.net-abuse.usenet.
Read up on Hipcrime and rogue cancels. When you have more

Hey, I've miscancelled. I've also been miscancelled. I guess I
understand from the inside how this happens occasionally and I don't
have the same reaction to it that I do to erroneous netcopping (which
has also happened to me) or deliberate rogue cancels based on what I
was saying (again, something that has happened to me).
People on both sides (all sides) are looking for open relaying servers
for all sorts of reasons.
No - it isn't - it looks like an admission that he got caught cancelling
my posts by a vigilant ISP. What would have happened if they weren't
caught and questioned?
I don't see any post to ME apologizing or telling me what I have asked
to know.
Besides the questions in the thread 'any chance for some sunshine in
this place?' I want to know the EXACT mechanism involved in why my posts
had to be removed from a 'trigger'? who set this trigger and why was it
set?

According to Jim Shoe <club...@aol.com>:
> Here are 10 cancels, and more are continuing to show up.
DtR is rather paranoid about cancels coming from the 24.* netblock
because there have been at least 6 rogue cancel attacks
coming from there since the announcement of the UDP. And of course
we're going through another set of rogue cancels right now (notice
all of the REPOSTS).
As such, DtR has been automatically assuming that any cancels in
nanau from a 24.* IP is the sign of another attack of this
nature, and DtR tells Buffy the Vampire Slayer to go into a very
aggressive mode where any cancels from that IP gets resurrected,
and any other article from that IP gets cancelled (those familiar
with Hipcrime will understand why).
This means, unfortunately, that anyone on 24.* who cancels their own
posting (not aware that DtR would repost it in any case) triggers
DtR's rabid sister Buffy, and all heck breaks loose.
I got several email notifications of this misfire, including one
from RR Security (on the ball as usual of late) - thank you all
for bringing DtR's mistake to my attention.
My apologies for this situation. The IP address (24.25.132.5) has
been removed from the trigger. DtR's mistake has already been
explained to Road Runner Security, so, nothing else should happen.
However, for anyone on a 24.*, please don't even try to cancel your
own posting in nanau, Buffy is still watching.
Do you have any posts from that time? What was his explanation?
Can you read the headers from my cancellations and tell me what they
really show?

You don't understand. Pretty much everything in this newsgroup gets
cancelled. Don't take it too personally.

I may not have noticed it was malfunctioning.
The bot runs unattended, and I do not examine everything it does - largely
because when hipcrime or IRSAgent lets fly with rogue cancels, we're talking
thousands or tens of thousands, and I can't visually inspect them all.
I often rely on others to report it to me when it misfires. People
such as David Ritz are quite good at finding the mistakes and letting me
know - in this case, David, Howard, RR abuse, and at least one other
person had emailed me, and I took immediate steps to prevent it happening
any more, and responded to the thread regarding the subject here with
an explanation and apology.
> I don't see any post to ME apologizing or telling me what I have asked
> to know.
If you had an email address I could have e-mailed to, I would have done
so. Failing that, I thought that the responses that I had already made
would be sufficient. Apparently I was mistaken.
So: I apologize for the bot's screwup. It was a mistake, and I've taken
steps to ensure that it doesn't happen again.
> Besides the questions in the thread 'any chance for some sunshine in
> this place?' I want to know the EXACT mechanism involved in why my posts
> had to be removed from a 'trigger'? who set this trigger and why was it
> set?
You've included the exact mechanism from one of my previous postings
below - in short: due to the ongoing rogue cancel attacks coming from
the 24.* netblock, DtR assumed _any_ cancel from 24.* in nanau to be
a sign of another hipcrime-like attack in progress. When it detected
one, it configured itself to suppress _everything_ from that location.
You had made a posting to nanau, and then subsequently cancelled it
yourself. Since the latter was from 24.*, DtR went into full-suppress
mode, and cancelled everything else.
I've removed that, so it won't happen again. If I hadn't done that, DtR
is programmed to automatically disable suppression mode in 2 days, and
it would have stopped on its own. But obviously, it was better to
intervene and fix it manually.
I assure you, this was a mistake on my part, no others were involved.
Again, my apologies.

Chris already posted his explanation and apology. What more did you
want?
> With this said - Is what HipCrime and the HipClones do in 'rogue
> cancels' illegal or raise any civil repercussions?
No; the cancelling is not illegal. HipCrime's actions in flooding could
rise to the level of a denial of service attack, of course, and there
are other things being done, but the cancelling itself is not against
the law.

Sure -- HipCrime stops attacking the network, and all will be well. But,
he doesn't want to do that, because the network has not been destroyed,
which is his goal.
Blood, probably. And in the spirit of clearing the air, I had a major
<AOL></AOL> moment when I mis-identified the cancels as *NOT* being
from CL. I hereby await the Kaffeine Kangaroo Kourt to take me away
for not having a high enough blood kaffeine level.

And I'd have to stop asking for his head on a platter?
Ok.
I'll settle for it adorning a pike.

Again, Thank You.
If you and the others mentioned below wouldn't mind answering some
questions I think you might see where I'm going now.
Would you like to see the Usenet develop into the absolute premier and
desired information location on the Internet? Without the rogue cancels?
Without the types of problems so apparent in new.admin.net-abuse.usenet?
As well as without the need for UDP's and the associated potential
problems it harbours? As well as correcting some major flaws in
operational design?
Do you feel the present state of Usenet is the way it should really be?
Would you be up to some kind of reconcilation with HipCrime?
Would HipCrime be up to some kind of reconcilation with you?
Would you be up to some kind of reconciliation with Bloxy's?
Would Bloxy's be up to some kind of reconciliation with you?
All might have to compromise but all could get most of what each wants
and '$' to compensate for the minimal parts compromised away.
I have a plan in mind that could possible work.
Are any of the parties interested?

What are you talking about, 'post to ME'?? You haven't given out your
email address!
He posted an apology. If you want to complain that he didn't contact
you, then you're proving yourself to be a total kook, because there *is*
no way to contact you directly.

RR/M1 _had_ a track record of being very bad and completely unresponsive -
their only saving grace was that they weren't being abused as badly as
they could have been.
However, since (and probably somewhat before) their new Abuse manager
(or whatever MH's real title is) came on board, and participates heavily
in some of the anti-spam lists, RR/M1 has been as responsive as anyone
can ask for.

Usenet is a niche service, and fulfills a specific role - "free", "cheap",
"multitude of subjects", everyone is their own publisher.
WWW is now clearly the premier service, and is pulling away fast as the
commercial driver of the Internet. WWW is standard broadcast TV. Usenet
is more like PBS. Or, coaching a little league baseball team.
Neither can completely replace the other.
> Do you feel the present state of Usenet is the way it should really be?
At 100K+ spam cancels, floods, and that DtR is actually necessary, no.
> Would you be up to some kind of reconcilation with HipCrime?
> Would HipCrime be up to some kind of reconcilation with you?
What you really have to understand about Hipcrime is that his fundamental
purpose is to line his own pockets. He writes and sells spamming software.
His motivation is to engineer an environment where he can sell software
that permits spammers to spam the hell out of everyone. _Both_ in email
and Usenet.
In other words, he wants to use Usenet purely as a spamming medium, whereas,
we just want to be able to talk about widgets.
There is a fundamental conflict between what he wants, and what most
people want.
His Usenet is where _every_ group looks like alt.business.multi-level.
Our Usenet is where most groups at least bears _some_ resemblance to
the newsgroup name.
There is no compromise possible here. Do you think you have one?
> Would you be up to some kind of reconciliation with Bloxy's?

If I could make any sense out of what Bloxy's is saying or wanting, I'd
be able to answer that question.

You mean something like a commercial advertising on TV?
"$" is not the driving force here. It's what the web is for.

Really, Henrietta.

You must have an amazing DNS server.

Note: Omlette is speaking at the double quotes.
I agree 99.9% with this post.
Would like to add a couple of more comments.
1. Two months ago, I wrote HipCrime and told him of the death of
one of the despammers. I asked if it made any difference to him.
He wrote back, "No. RIP." Absolute proof that there will never be
any reconciliation with him.
2. The despammers can't be bought, and Usenet is not for sale.
3. If you know HipCrime or any of the spammers, tell them to go
away and leave Usenet alone.

What flaws?

Kinda, but not really.

Sure -- he goes away.
> Would HipCrime be up to some kind of reconcilation with you?
No.

Nothing to reconcile, he's just a frothing loon, gone off his meds.
> Would Bloxy's be up to some kind of reconciliation with you?
No.

Shouldn't you learn how this Usenet works, though, before proposing a
new one?

Argumentum ad misercordiam. Not that I like Hipcrime or anything; I just
thought I'd point that out.

And tell them I want a pony, too.

|At this point there IS a VALID case.
He may have a cause of action, but where is the evidence? Remember the
difference between evidence that can be authenticated, and that which
cannot. It can all go down the drain as an 'ipse dixit.' Why, sure, he
names John Does 1-20, and then a few ISP's while he is at it, under a
tort theory of some kind, but he needs more than what he seems to have.
