informed me that Mark Kelley will NOT be appearing at
Saturday's seminar here. No representatives from Directnet

Interesting. Could it be that he's scared of ...errrm... disruptions
of his talk? Fortunately, his buddy from Earthlink (another clam
front) is also there :)

From what I understand, the spam started up again Sat. morning from
Directnet. It is well beyond the time to apply UDP to these jokers.

Chris Gwynne, the former system administrator at Directnet,
emailed me the following message, which he would like me to
post on his behalf.

In particular, if you are still planning
to attend the June 22 Caltech Enterprise Forum, please be
aware that Alex Lightman is no longer part of Directnet
and in fact left Directnet before the spamming started.
His new company, Light Intertainment, is not an ISP,
and it has no connection with either Directnet or Earthlink.

I think Chris Gwynne is one of the Good Guys. He helped us
a lot last year when a Cancelbunny (tl...@directnet.com)
was active on his system.

Hello Ron, I haven't bumped into you in a while.

Sorry I didn't respond to your email sooner, I no longer work at
DirectNet so I rarely check my email there. As the new admins there
still have me listed as postmaster and news admin, it was quite
unpleasant to discover my mail box full of complaints due to other
people's negligence. I have left DirectNet due to many personal reasons
but as head admin there, I didn't have the resources I needed to
do what I really wanted. I am not completely surprised that this happened
after I left the new administrators are probably not up to speed
nevertheless, I don't want to make excuses for them (someone fucked up,
and I'm just glad it wasn't on my shift anymore).

I do want to write to you about this because of my new company.
My love is in content creation, I have a 3d animator in Hollywood
for many years before I started the ISP DirectNet, but after being
involved in what an ISP is about, I will never configure public
use servers and routers again! My new company is called Light
Intertainment, I suspect you've heard about it because my partner
is speaking at Caltech this Saturday and there has been an unbeleivable
amount of noise on just who we are. We develop web sites check
out www.thearrival.com (lots of Shockwave and Jvascript) but there is
absolutely no relationship to any of the services that ISP's provide.

Many of the people that are incensed about the recent SPAMs are
suggesting that they are going to target this weekends meeting to
raise some hell as they have inacurately made a very imaginative
association between my partner Alex Lightman (former CFO of DIrectNet)
and the previous company DirectNet as well as Earthlink (whom I've never
liked!!!). I would have to guess that some people have whipped themselves
up into a frenzy about the SPAMS, it's not something I really understand
as a former admin of news servers, I'm so fed up with USENET, I simply
don't read it anymore, and as such have nothing to get worked up about.

It as silly that a really good new web design company with people
from a Hollywood production background (not just my own) are being
singled out as being responsible or even related with a screw up that
happened at a company which provides a service that is the anti-thesis
of what we do. WE HATE THE ISP BUSINESS! YECH! After 2 years for me, I'm
thoroughly disgusted. So when we where asked if we had any ideas on how
to make money on the Internet, we were thinking as designers, things
like cool, zippy fast proprietary backbones (like for games), or CDROM's
on how to make the type of web sites we do (we are also doing the site for
Babylon 5 that is making so much press). But
an idea like spamming the Internet to make money? Didn't that die as a
marketing idea the those stupid lawyers?

I think you might like some of the things Alex is going to say.

We push Shockwave.
We play Duke Nukem
We design cool shit

But SPAM ? Thats for Internet chimps and ISP's !
I'm so glad I'm not in that business.

Anyways, you helped me out when I was a Wabbit Hunter and had that
damn Tlash account. I still have the program you guys helped me write
that would track his behaviour. It's probably still on mach1.directnet.com
in /usr/local/temp/bin/diskcleaner.pl (really secretive huh?) but thank
god I'm not root there anymore.

Well, I guess that's it, I'm sorry all that crap happened in the USENET
I wonder if this stuff will continue to happen when AT&T is top ISP?

I'd like to ask you a favor though, can you pass my note along to some of
the other frustrated people out there who are planning on targeting us at
this Caltech meeting? I think the association between us and the SPAM
nonsense is unfair and undeserved. I hope you guys do come though I think
we have some interesting things to contribute and if Alex does go into an
areas the are not good ideas for the whole of the net then sure I'll even
help you with the some water balloons (hey there's alot of typos here).
