I run machines at a small government site, and we got spammed by LA Aluminum. I also got a spam here on my netcom account. I called the folks there up and explained the issue, and they were pretty polite and helpful, actually. So then they had the spam company call me.
I talked to Christeine Bentley at Email For You (407-464-1566), and as always, I told the spammer that I'd hang up as soon as she lied, and I did so.
Anyway, the spam company then sent the following message on to their customer, which I find absolutely hilarious. Sorry it took me so long to forward this on....
Clearly, I didn't claim to be the 'head of security' for any other 'computer intelligence' division (and surely if I were going to lie I could have thought up something a lot less silly than that), but on the whole most of the stuff they list is accurate information, just twisted in a pretty amazing way. (Oh yes, the Air Force Base and NASA/Langley are also totally different organizations and so someone is a bit confused).
I have no clue what was in the attachment cited, since it was some huge Word document, and it's obviously not repeated here.
Anyway, I thought you guys would get a kick out of this stuff. Don't piss off spammers or you might get investigated like I did <mild chuckle>.

I have done research on the events that lead to my contacting you and have the following information to report:
An individual email was sent to Scott B. Dorsey at Klu...@netcom.com in regards to his interest in Aerospace. This individual, after receiving the email was angry and called LA Aluminum and portrayed to be the Head of Security of NASA- Computer Intelligence Division. LA Aluminum put Mr. Dorsey in touch with Bob Petet from Sales Creators. Sales Creators has been contracted by LA Aluminum to help with their marketing.
Mr. Dorsey relayed to Mr. Petet that Emailed4U.com, who was contracted with LA Aluminum and sent the original email ad, had broken into the main database at Langley/ NASA Air Force Base and had messed up NASA spoolers, etc. Mr. Dorsey said he was working undercover to put a stop to such events from happening. He went onto report that Emailed4U.com had sent more than 400+ of these email ads all over Langley Airforce Base and that NASA was very upset and ready to take action. He further stated that at twelve-noon he (Mr. Dorsey) was turning everything over to the government for prosecution and restitution.
At approximately 11:00am I, Christine Bentley, owner of Emailed4U.com, contacted Scott B. Dorsey at 757-864-4056 to further assist him in any way possible to resolve this issue. Mr. Dorsey again led me to believe that he was the Head of Security for NASA. He said, "I only have two questions for you. 1st. Question- Why are you sending HTML?" I replied, "Because the client who contracted with us wanted to send graphically enriched text." Mr. Dorsey replied, "2nd. Question- How did you get these addressees?" I replied, "Sir that's what I would like to know." Mr. Dorsey than said GOOD BYE... and hung up.
After this conversation with Mr. Dorsey something didn't seem right, so I contacted NASA and eventually spoke with Mr. Steve Peyton at 202-358-019, Head of NASA Security. Mr. Peyton was willing to listen and investigate. I offered to send a copy of the email ad and copies of the entire list of the 5,000 email addressees we, Emailed4U.com sent on LA Aluminum's' behalf.
After further investigation, I found out that Scott B. Dorsey is simply an employee of Computer Science Corporation. CSC is contracted with many different companies including the following, NASA, Lockheed Martin, AT&T and United Technologies to name only a few.
If this was simply a way for Mr. Dorsey to vent anger about receiving an email ad that he opted into receive, that this is completely unacceptable. Something needs to be done for this has affected Emailed4U.com and my reputation a great deal. If no one, including Mr. Scott Dorsey, can show documentation that can support these serious allegations that have been made against Emailed4U.com, I would ask that immediate action be taken from all involved parties. I know that it is a serious crime to impersonate a government official.
A more detailed report is attached concerning Mr. Scott B. Dorsey.
I want to express my thanks to Mr. Peyton for any and all help he has and can give me in this matter. I am sending this information to the following: Mr. Steve Peyton, Mr. Bob Petet and also to Computer Science Corporation. I would appreciate any further assistance in resolving this issue.

Those are the sites where you sign up for updates on a program or game you've just bought, or where you ask to be notified when the site is updated... evidently some website operators believe that since site visitors "opt-in" to receiving their updates, they're _also_ agreeing having their address sold to spammers.
This is an abuse of the opt-in permission: just because I want to be alerted when an interesting website is updated doesn't mean I'm _ALSO_ giving permission to that website operator to sell my address on a mailing list.

[Complete post below my thoughts]
Scott,
I appreciate the humor in this very much indeed, and thank you for sharing. :)
However, there is a serious side to this. Based on your report, in the Spammer's zeal to blame-shift, an all-too common symptom of terminal Spammers I might add, their falsehoods could be actionable by your agency, or you personally.
If you feel this appropriate, run this event by your Guvmint attorney and let us know the results. At a minimum, if it was me, I would fire back an abuse complaint for the false accusations from the Spammer, introducing them once again to my LART-O-MATIC Whack-a-Moler (tm, Gallagher). :)
IMO, Spammers need to learn our society demands a certain level of behavior, and Spamming, then making up bovine excrement in a feeble attempt to blame-shift or discredit the complainant, will not be tolerated. Free-speech does not include this, but I guess Spammers think they can say anything to anyone, including 3 million E-mail addresses at a time, if they so desire.
There can indeed be justice, but it does takes work.
Tanky,
^S|S|B^

not with air to air refueling.. using black kc-10 tankers of course..

i don't know of any chickenboners from around this area.. reading is a small city of around 80,000, most of whom wouldn't know a modem from a brick. the surrounding county is mostly farmers and coal crackers.
an hour's drive to the northeast from here will get you in chickenbrunner's neck of the trailerpark.
hmm, those helicopters could have gotten lost looking for andy's place.. maybe got bad directions from a state trooper or something and ended up down here instead...

Reading is well within the service radius of any black helicopters flying around the Nazareth area. There are all sorts of places one could land a helo in the area; Pennsylvania's laws are pretty liberal regarding what can be used as a landing area [if it meets minimum safety requirements and the property owner says so, then it's okay - more or less].
I don't know of any chickenboners in the Reading area, personally. There was a spammer-haven ISP in Wilkes-Barre further north, but they seem to have been acquired by someone else or something - haven't seen hide nor hair out of them in quite some time. There -does- seem to be a small spammer colony in the vicinity of Effort PA, which is northeast of Reading, but otherwise...

Ya, I thought so ... They _were_ after Spamdrew. Those helos carry vulcan miniguns, iirc (or at least that's what I see in all those Jack Ryan movies - Clear and Present Danger, say). Modern versions of the civil war Gatlings, with an awesome firepower.
Oh btw, someone fire the dumb air traffic controller who misdirected those helos (tandatcwmth) _and_ let the newspapers find out about 'em. Black Helos are supposed to be s00p3r s3kr1t, for $deity's sake :)
