Hey, NONGers,

I received in the mail yesterday notification of a very special (special to
*me*) art show coming up, and I was all ready to pack my bags for a quick trip
to New Orleans, and then I found that the show is the day after I fly to Kansas
City for a vacation visit with a friend. *sigh* Once again, my timing sucks.

Anyway, I'd like to pass on the information for anyone interested in such
things. It's a showing of the works of Mexican artist Leonardo Nierman. Nierman
is my favorite contemporary artist, and some of you may be familiar with his
work, which usually is on display in the Bryant Gallery on Royal Street. His
paintings, lithographs, art posters, etc. are the brilliantly colored abstracts
usually prominantly displayed at Bryant's.

But that's not the only place his work can be found. Try the Museum of Fine Art
in Boston, the Kennedy Center in Washington, the Art Institute of Chicago and
even the Vatican, just to mention a few. And he's not only known for his
paintings, but also for sculptures and tapestries -- and all will be on display
at this show, scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 6, at the Bryant Gallery.

But the real treat is that Nierman (nearly 70 now) will be there in person. This
apparently is a very rare thing, as he almost never makes public appearances
anymore.

Personally, I discovered Nierman's works at the Bryant Gallery about 6-8 years
ago and was absolutely blown away by it. The interesting thing is that I usually
don't like abstract paintings, but I *love* Nierman's -- probably because I can
actually see what he's trying to convey in them. I fell in love with his work,
but saw that it easily was priced way beyond *my* price range, so I passed it
up, only to pass the gallery on other occasions and, once again, lust after the
incredibly powerful images. And then, while in New Orleans last December, I once
again passed the Bryant Gallery and saw more Niermans on display, *but* this
time, there also was a sign next to the main display: Art posters, $45. Well, I
couldn't resist. So, now I may not have a Nierman original, but at least I *do*
have one of his images. And, personally, I'd rather have a really good art
poster or print -- especially if it's an image that speaks to me -- than a bad
original.

So, if you have some time on Oct. 6, make your way over to Royal Street and
enjoy this very special show -- and think of me and how much I'd love to be
there on any other weekend. Like I said, my timing sucks. :( But I'm not giving
up my vacation, not even for Leonardo Nierman, but I *do* regret missing the
show and what probably will be the only even remote opportunity I'll ever have
to meet a true artistic master.
