A couple of weeks ago I painted faces and passed out goody bags to a group
home called "Straight Street." Today came the best part--the thank you
notes. Thought I'd share a few:

"Hi Miss Jane. I wanna thank you for coming by and painting our faces. I
really enjoyed it. I have never been that type of person to paint my
face. You brought out the little girl in me. Thank you so much. Love
Gabi. I am the only one you painted the butterfly on my whole face." (a
butterfly drawing came with this one)

"Ms. Jane Hey! How are you? I'm doing good. I'm writing to tell you how
grateful me and all the girls at Straight Street are for your face
paintings and the surprise bags and all. We had a lot of fun. I loved my
spider web and my pink flower! They were very good! Thank you. I hope
you come around again. And good luck with your face paintings! See you
around!"

"Miss Jane. Hi, thanks for doing my face painting. I really liked it
alot. You are very good at it and it puts smiles on paeoples faces. What
you did on mine was very patriotic and I liked the flag streamers and the
firecracker. I'm very thankful you came to do it for us! Well I really
enjoyed it and it made me have a better day. Thanks alot for doing it."

"Hey Ms. Jane, How you doin? I'm donig fine. Thank you so much for
everything you did for us that night. We had a great time. I think face
painting is awesome. We ended up going to Blockbuster for a movie and so
everyone there could see our faces. Everybody thought it was from the fair
Gabi (with the butterfly face) Scared a little boy; it was funny. the boy
looked at Gabi and ran. Anyhow I hope you know how much fun we had that
night. When they first said that we were going to have our faces painted,
I didn't know what to think. I thought it would probably be cool but a
little boring. But it wasn't boring at all. It was so fun. After you
left we couldn't stop laughing, jumping up and down and shouting. It was
an unforgegttable night. Well I'm runnin outta words, so I'll sigh off
now.

Those letters were as much fun as the evening I spent with them.

I am going to volunteer my Xgiving cooking and feeding the homeless
here in Atlanta. I won't get a single thank you even though this has
become a prestigious and noble event....

This event might have some potential if you instead feed, and THEN cook the
homeless...

And no one deserves thanks for performing an act of charity. Anytime a charity
'event' becomes prestigious and noble, it is designed for the ego, not the
heart.

Everyone who has an art, such as you do, dear sweet Miss Jane, has the
opportunity to brighten someone else's heart. You done good, but, that was not
the point, at all, was it?
You have immaculate grace, darlin', immaculate grace...

Love, Janine

Truer words have not been spoken, Jim. Volunteering a gift, especially when
uninvited, is the token we may share with one another.

There you go again... blowing holes in my Thanksgiving plans... I had this
great idea to sell off slices of my leftover turkey to the homeless... "10$ for a
turkey leg buddy, you ain't got it? Then looks to me like someone hasn't been
begging HARD enough... huh, don't give me that 'I'm so hungry look'."

Yep... I'm going to hell.

Nah, Wil, that's minor league stuff compared to that
guy in Chicago a couple of years ago who was
**hunting** the homeless with a bow & arrow. phhffft......

Exactly, Jane. You have a talent that you can use to brighten the day of people
in need of a little happiness in their lives. Your "payment" is in knowing that
you helped them. The letters truly are lagniappe, not something you expect or
even think you deserve, but something that lets you know that you succeeded in
your purpose of making them happier, at least for a little while.

So let's just don't thank any of the mobs of volunteers at ground zero?

I wrote a thank you note to the policeman who responded to the car
wreck I was injured in during July. I could have just ignored his efforts
to help me. He wrote back and even coached me about what I should
tell the judge on my day in traffic court! I did what he said and got
off with a tiny fine.

I guess I'm just not getting this thread at all. If somebody lends me a
helping hand, I thank them. And I expect vice versa.

And it's considered an HONOR to do volunteer work feeding the homeless
on Xgiving day! In fact, this event has turned into a huge affair. Doctors
see patients for free. Hairdressers get people all cleaned up and looking
good. Merchants give away nice, clean clothes. Inspriring sermons are
delivered. Anybody needing help is taken in - nobody is turned away.
This event has expanded to include Xmas and Easter now. I think it's
great because everybody works together side by side. Blacks, whites,
Jews, Baptists, Asians - everybody. And now, folks in nursing homes
are transported to the place to enjoy the food, entertainment and all
the other above-mentioned services. There is no official name for
this charity that I know of.......

Ironically, the founder of the event was a perenenially-elected local
black official (from a wealthy family) and who was often arrested for
DUI. His response to his drunken charges was that "he was just representing
the people!"

I had tried to work another well-known volunteer agency here in Atlanta
a few years ago. I owned a truck and could work a chain saw and one of
our famous parks needed a good cleaning up. I thought I'd chip in and help.
The organizers of the event offended me by telling some other volunteers
for a different effort about how not to be shocked when bringing food to
AIDs victims. Other, similar remarks were made that equally offended me.
Remarks about how to behave around gay people. It was all very
stereotypical
and DUMB. I got up, wadded up their registration form and threw it in the
girl's face right
in front of the whole crowd! True story. I routinely blast that
organization.
As recently as two weeks ago I stopped my car and cussed-out one of them who
had blocked my entrance into a parking lot just after he had let some else
in.
I got so angry, I decided to dial 911 and report this person. He saw me do
this
and vanished into the crowd. I am not the only person who dislikes this
organization.
Blacks generally will not have anything to do with it. And I'll bet they've
insulted
the Jews as well. It appears to be a white, Baptist outfit (but they don't
advertise
that).

Regards,

Jules
