unfortunately, Mozilla doesn't seem to work well with NaturallySpeaking's select
and say features for speech recognition driven editing. Therefore, I would like
to use an external editor which is select and say enabled. Is it possible to
substitute an external editor?

Have you found an (external) html editor (for Thunderbird*) that is Select-and-Say enabled? I have tried about two dozen editors, and not ONE was Select-and-Say enabled. :-(
