Thunderbird 3 expand threads

I used to use Tbird for mail, newsgroups and RSS.

Now use outlook for mail because it synchs with my phone.

I can no longer rely on Tbird to expand threads. Have to hit the
asterisk every time.

Any ideas on how to solve this?

Alternatively is there a better application for NGs and RSS.

TIA for any replies.
