I have been using Firefox ever since it came out. Currently, I
am using 2.0.0.16 on a Windows XP (SP2) machine. One
behavior pattern is very annoying and I wonder if there is a
fix.

When, for whatever reason, Firefox hangs, it is impossible
to kill it. Attempts to kill it by just closing or through the
Task Manager just have no effect. The usual warning
box "If you stop this program ...." pops up, and hitting
"End Now" just closes the box, but Firefox merrily
stays on. Even after several attempts, nothing changes.

Rebooting is the only fix I know and even that has to
be completed with a crash by hitting the power switch
as Windows logs off the users, etc. and commences
shutdown, but cannot complete it.

It only happens now and then, but it is very
disruptive when it happens. Any remedies?

thanks

you can try and delete the parent.lock file, which is
located in the FF profile. Otherwise, its a known
problem with no fix in the near future.

An instance of FF is still running & in winxp, I use task manager BUT I
do it in the end "process" of the task manager; works all the time.
Killing the program task doesn't always do a killing of the process.

FF3 has the "same" problem so I always check the processes & look for
the "firefox" process.

In linux, one has to open a virtual concole to kill the process & I
haven't really decided which is the FF process should be killed so I
just do all 3 in my implementation..

Sorry, but I do not get it. I use the Task Manager, select the
'firefox.exe' and do the "End Process" thing. That is what pops
up the dialogue box. "End Now" has no effect if FF is hung up.
What am I doing different?

One other thing. Could it be becuase other users are also
uisng FF at that time?

thanks

I'm not on winxp now, but when you select task manager, there are some tabs
for different functions; usually the 1st tab is just the application/task
& if you haven't closed the task manager after viewing the other tabs, that
is what you see.

The *2nd* tab is the process list & you would see a long list of what is
"running" & who/what is executing the process. If you don't see a full list
that included the system proceses, then you are looking at the wrong tab
contents. I "think" that the 2nd tab is called processes.....

If multiple users are using FF, then the process listing may show the other
users' names along with their particular process; you want to kill ony the
process associated with your username.

Thanks. That the tab I use to kill .... or attempt to kill Firefox. I
find the process and try to "End Process" it. That is what pops up
a dialog box and I choose to 'end right now'. But, Firefox just
does not quit.

Anyway, as others have suggested, it appears to be a known
problem. Interesting, though, that it is stll a problem.
