Right off the bat, if your answer is to tell me to update the browser,
I'm going to slap you upside the head because I don't want to. I have
my reasons.

So with that out of the way, how do I go about updating the root
certificates for this animal?

Would I be right in thinking that this has something to do with the file
nssckbi.dll ?

Can I replace my existing version of that file with a more recent
version - even if it's from a newer version of filefox?

Life must be though with a highly outdated operating system, but you can still
upgrade without the need of buying new hardware, take a look at
vectorlinux.com or/and www.damnsmalllinux.org

Download the source (if it's still provided) and do the modifications you
need, compile it.

Not without including the other files (full update).

Ok, more files than just

nspr4.dll
nss3.dll
nssckbi.dll

????

Yes, all that is included in the firefox package.

Even when I take those 3 files from a recent version of firefox
(firefox-11.0b1.zip) and transplant them into my FF-2 program folder
(over-writing the ones already there) it doesn't change anything. I'm
still being warned of a problem with the certificate for a certain bank
website login page that I use.

I've checked the certificate details that FF is displaying in the error
message with the results of an on-line lookup portal for the same URL
and they seem to match.

Are there more than just those 3 files involved in the root certificate
lookup process?

nspr and nss don't include certificates.
libxul.dll (I guess it would be named) includes certificates, but copy that
from an new version of firefox will most likely render your outdated firefox
unusable.

Recommendations:

1. Import the certificate into firefox
2. Upgrade your OS to a modern one where you can run firefox 10.

Those 3 are involved in reading the certificates.

My current version of firefox as well as two other versions (when their
distribution archive is decompressed) do not include the file
libxul.dll.

The other versions I'm speaking about are:

Firefox Setup 3.5.19.exe
firefox-11.0b1.zip

Where might I obtain the file libxul.dll?

In Firefox 3.x it's [xul.dll] (Internal Name 'libxul'), and
installed it's located in the same folder as the main exe,
[Firefox.exe].

It's not present in Firefox 2.x, so there is probably not
anything that would read that file even if you grafted it in
there from a newer Firefox version.

Nah-ah. I'm staying out of this. ... Now, here's my opinion.
