It has been I while since I promoted my free tweak
to save screen space with Firefox (a userChrome.css)

Just wanted to say that it is still updated, and that
the latest version work on all versions up to 11a

We're on the same track and I appreciate your work in this area. Like you I
was an IE6 user who became disenchanted with the loss of user
customizability in IE7-IE8, enough so that I switched to Firefox after I
discovered it can emulate the IE6 layout.

userchrome.css tweaks or special themes aren't necessary for Firefox 3.6.x
to provide a browser screen layout like IE6. The Location Bar and Search Bar
(if desired) can be dragged to the Menu Bar along with basic control icons.
No other toolbars are necessary.

I was a happy camper til Firefox 4 was released, departing drastically from
that layout and killing the user customizability. Something special was
required to return Firefox 4+ to that layout, either a theme or chrome file
tweaks, or both. So far I'm using the theme method with Firefox 6.0.1 and
find that "Firefox 3 theme for Firefox 4+" works nicely. I *do* want the
Menu Bar. Here's how the top of my display looks in Firefox 6.0.1:

(looks exactly the same as Firefox 3.6.x)

With either version I prefer that tabs only appear if more than one website
is opened simultaneously.

I forgot. I've made a few inprovements to the Location (URL) Bar with
userchrome.css file tweaks:

/* Remove unimportant Location Bar Icon Text (from Bob)
-- click on the favicon to see information
-- http://eriwen.com/firefox/use-the-dom-inspector/
-- Firefox 4.0+ again respects browser.identity.ssl_domain_display set to
0 */
#identity-icon-label { display: none !important; }

/* Turn Location Bar Yellow for HTTPS */
#urlbar[level] .autocomplete-textbox-container { background-color: #FFFFB7
!important; }

/* remove that bookmark star on the right side of the URL bar */
#star-button { display: none; }
