McAfee requires IE as default browser!

I've been a customer of McAfee's VirusScan Online for several years. I
started using Firebird as my default browser about a month ago (with
Windows Me).

I <right-click> the McAfee icon in the tray and tell it to check for
updates about twice a week. There have been at least 2 (maybe more)
updates since I've been using Firebird. The first time I tried I
discovered that I needed to tell the popup manager to allow popups from
"mcafee.com", and it has worked fine since then... until today.

This morning my check revealed an update was available for VirusScan
online. About 10 seconds after I clicked the <Update Now> button I was
presented with this screen:
<http://mysite.verizon.net/rcb.k5wls/Mcafee-browser.jpg>

My last successful update was no more than a week ago, so McAfee made
this change within the past week.

Understand that we are not talking about "Please use Internet Explorer
for this update". McAfee opens the browser windows, and since there is
not a configuration option to specify browser, I'm assuming McAfee is
calling the default browser.

I'm pretty bummed out about the whole thing. I'm not really in the mood
to screw around with those guys. Any advice? I guess I'll have to go
back to IE until my McAfee subscription is up, and then look for
alternative virus software.

Thanks in advance...

Get the "User Agent Switcher" plugin for FB. It changes the User Agent
String to IE (don't forget to set it back afterwards) easily. This should
work.

A handy trick- the only drawback is that it distorts any browser usage
statistics which may be collected. Eventually you'll have a situation like
this;

Idiot Manager: 100% of users are using Internet Explorer- even the Linux
users- so lets stop coding for standards etc. and just
code for Microsoft. It's more work, but my puny mind is
convinced it'll be less work- and that by excluding users
it'll somehow translate into getting the largest audience
for our site!

Mozilla User: Hrm, that site doesn't render or work any more. D'oh!
Boned myself!

So, having successfully used a site with Mozilla with the user agent
switcher, also write politely to the site's technical people/ sales staff/
webmaster/ whoever to explain that it actually works fine in Mozilla, and
ask if they could remove the browser discrimination so you can stop forging
your user agent :-) .

Thanks for the tip!

I changed the user agent to:
Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 5.5; Windows 98)

Then I tried updating McAfee VirusScan again. As soon as I clicked <update
now> I received this notice:
http://mysite.verizon.net/rcb.k5wls/McAfee-java.jpg

[The wording is: Java Plug-in for Netscape Navigator should not be used in
Microsoft Internet Explorer. Please use Java Plug-in for Microsoft
Internet Explorer instead.]

Now what? (Thanks so much for your assistance!)

Rick

Mhh, I don't know if there are differences between the IE and Mozilla Java
Plugin, that wouldn't allow to run an applet written for Sun's IE plugin in
Mozilla. If that's possible you're most likely doomed to use IE for this,
otherwise - if it's just one more step of discrimination - write the
webmasters (one thing you should've done from the beginning, i just forgot
to say ;))

Hello Rick:

Java is java and should not make a difference that is what the big
brouhaha between Microsoft and Sun a couple of years ago where Sun tried
to keep Microsoft from making its own 'perversion' of java. Here a
suggestion, get somebody else software; Norton, Panda, whatever, and
make sure you inform McAfee why you switched! Loosing customers usually
gets a company's attention.

Take care,
