A few years ago, I bought Netnewswire (when it was still a non-free
software) and now I have ads at the bottom left of the screen with the
message to buy Netnewswire if I want to get rid of the ads. How many
times do I have to buy this software ?

I don't know when your license expired, but the last of the previous licenses expired in early December 2008. A license purchased now will be good for all future 3.x and 4.x releases.

(Which means, yes, you'd have to buy it again when it goes to 5.0. My goal would be to make it worth it, of course. Based on past experience, 5.0 will ship in 2012. That's not a promise, though, just a guess.)

And new features have been added since. I know the switch from paid to
free back to paid gives this an odd feeling, but it's not unreasonable
to hav paid upgrades from time to time. Plus, the ads are fairly
unobtrusive and the free version is completely full-featured unlike
the ole NNW lite.
