BBC titles showing, but content "stuck" on first title

For a week or so the BBC feed has been broken for me in NNW.

The titles are all visible and I can scroll through them with the down arrow key. But the content doesn't change as I navigate down the list - it is stuck on the first item I have viewed. If I move to another feed and then back to the BBC feed I will be able to see the first item selected again but the other items remain "stuck" (title visible, content repeats from previous).

Haven't noticed this with any other feeds. Since the BBC feed is the most useful to me I've moved over to Vienna for now, but will move back if the problem is fixed. Any ideas?

BBC has made some changes to some of their feeds that is causing this problem in NetNewsWire. Right now, I don't have a fix. The best I can suggest is switching to Combined view when reading the affected feeds.

You can quickly switch between Combined and Traditional views by using these keyboard shortcuts:
Cmd+1 Traditional View
Cmd+2 Widescreen View
Cmd+3 Combined View

Alternatively, you can customize the toolbar and add the Layout buttons to make it easy to switch between views.

I have filed a bug for the developers to investigate.

Thanks for your quick response Jack and fix. I can confirm that combined view does work OK. I had forgotten about this view - in fact I think I like it as much as the traditional view. Cheers.

Any further news on this?

At a suggestion from Sheree, I figured out a workaround for this using Yahoo! Pipes. You'll need a Yahoo! account to implement this.

The view update problem is due to extra data that BBC is adding to the post URLs. Using the below procedure will remove that extra value, allowing you to read the feed normally in NetNewsWire.

(See screenshot below for reference.)

  1. Sign into http://pipes.yahoo.com and click "Create Pipe"
  2. Add the "Fetch Feed" module from the "Sources" group to the layout.
  3. Enter your BBC feed (e.g., http://feeds.bbci.co.uk/news/rss.xml?edition=us).
  4. Drag and drop the connectors between the "Fetch Feed" and "Pipe Output" modules as shown in the attached screenshot.
  5. Click the Save button and name the feed. This is the name that will be used for the feed in NetNewsWire. (e.g. BBC US News)
  6. Click "Run Pipe..." at the top of the page.
  7. Click "Get as RSS" (look for the orange RSS icon) to get the feed URL for NetNewsWire (which should launch automatically if it's set as your default RSS reader).
The feed may take a few minutes to update before you see posts.

Thanks, Jack for the workaround. Still waiting for my Yahoo ID to reactivate (!) in order to test this, but living in hope.
However, it's still unclear to me why Vienna has managed to cope with the BBC feed changes but NNW not.

As I mentioned in my first reply, it's a bug in NetNewsWire.

I can't get this to work, I get

This Pipe ran successfully but encountered some problems:

warning Error fetching http://www.bbc.co.uk/go/rss/int/news/-/news/england/manchester/. Response: OK (200). Error: Invalid XML document. Root cause: org.xml.sax.SAXParseException: The reference to entity "a" must end with the ';' delimiter.

Is this bug likely to be fixed, could you say, for those of us not technically competent to use this workaround?

Those feeds are valid, so I think it's a problem in Yahoo's parser, not something you did. That stinks because I thought I had a rock-solid workaround.

I don't have any updates for a fix in NetNewsWire, sorry.

I had no idea what I was doing with this "pipe" thing, but I followed
the instructions you provided … and it all works for me now.
Thanks for providing the workaround!

Does anyone know how to unsubscribe from this distribution list? I signed up in error.

I don't know how to do it on the old style Google Groups, but on the new one, go to the group home page:

Click on "My Membership" above the list of messages, and update your settings.

This bug is still not fixed in 3.3.1. I've been trying Gruml, which displays the BBC correctly, but has lots of display bugs that are just as annoying.

Thanks for the fix, I didn't like the combined view so it's good to be back. Was it very complicated to do?
