Scholarly (academic) journals contain articles that are intended for a
specialized audience. Written by experts in the field, these articles
contain new information and research findings. Scholarly articles go
through a process called peer review, in which the article is checked by
other experts to verify its validity, accuracy, authority, uniqueness,
etc., before it can be published in the journal.

.

Scholarly articles found within a journal can be quite lengthy (>10 pages)
and difficult for the average person to read. For example, a recent issue
of the Journal of Immunology contains the article Allergen-Induced Airway
Remodeling is Impaired in Galectin-3Deficient Mice. The authors use
specialized vocabulary and refer to complex theories with little or no
explanation because its assumed that people reading the article will
already have a background in immunology
