The E Street Band is a musical group that has periodically toured and
recorded with rock musician Bruce Springsteen since 1972.
The band has also recorded (both individually and as a band) with a wide
range of other artists including Bob Dylan, Meat Loaf, Bonnie Tyler, Air
Supply, Dire Straits, David Bowie, Peter Gabriel, Stevie Nicks, Sting, Ian
Hunter, Ringo Starr, Ronnie Spector, Gary U.S. Bonds, Darlene Love,
Southside Johnny, the Grateful Dead, Santana, Lucinda Williams, Steve
Earle, Emmylou Harris, Tracy Chapman, Lady Gaga, and Aretha Franklin.
When not working with Springsteen, members of the band have recorded solo
material and have pursued successful careers as session musicians, record
producers, songwriters, actors, and other roles in entertainment. The most
well-known in their separate careers are Max Weinberg, who has led his own
band, first on Late Night with Conan O'Brien and then on The Tonight Show
with Conan O'Brien, since 1993, and Steven Van Zandt, who starred as
Silvio Dante in the television series The Sopranos from 1999 to 2007.

Bruce Frederick Joseph Springsteen (born September 23, 1949), nicknamed
"The Boss," is an American singer-songwriter who records and tours with
the E Street Band. Springsteen is widely known for his brand of heartland
rock, poetic lyrics, and Americana sentiments centered on his native New
Jersey.[2]
Springsteen's recordings have included both commercially accessible rock
albums and more somber folk-oriented works. His most successful studio
albums, Born to Run and Born in the U.S.A., showcase a talent for finding
grandeur in the struggles of daily American life; he has sold more than 65
million albums in the United States and 120 million worldwide[3] and he
has earned numerous awards for his work, including 20 Grammy Awards, two
Golden Globes and an Academy Award. In 2004, Rolling Stone Magazine ranked
him as the 23rd greatest artist of all time in its 100 Greatest Artists of
All Time list.

Clarence Anicholas Clemons, Jr. (January 11, 1942 - June 18, 2011), also
known as The Big Man, was an American musician and actor. From 1972 until
his death, he was a prominent member of Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band,
playing the tenor saxophone. He released several solo albums and in 1985
had a hit single with "You're a Friend of Mine", a duet with Jackson
Browne. As a guest musician he also featured on Aretha Franklin's classic
"Freeway of Love" and on Twisted Sister's "Be Chrool to Your Scuel" as
well as performing in concert with The Grateful Dead and Ringo Starr & His
All-Starr Band. As an actor Clemons featured in several films, including
New York, New York and Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure. He also made
cameo appearances in several TV series, including Diff'rent Strokes, Nash
Bridges, The Simpsons and The Wire. Together with his television writer
friend Don Reo he published his autobiography, Big Man: Real Life & Tall
Tales, in 2009.[3] Clemons suffered a stroke on June 12, 2011 and died of
complications from the stroke on June 18[4] at 69 years of age.

Towards the end of Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band's 2009 world
tour, fans noticed that saxophonist Clarence Clemons looked like he was
having a rough time. He often sat through much of the show and seemed to
have difficulty getting on and off the stage.

"That last tour was hell," Clemons tells Rolling Stone. "Pure hell." In
the previous few years before the tour Clemons had his knees and hips
replaced, but he was still in a lot of pain - and the constant travel
didn't make it easier. "The tour was wonderful musically," he says. "But I
knew when it was done that I had to have more surgery."

surgery.

The stage "always feels like home. It's where I belong," Clemons, a former
youth counselor, said after performing Saturday night at a Hard Rock Cafe
benefit for Home Safe, a children's charity.
Clemons, who had surgery Jan. 13, said in a recent interview he's winning
his battles - including severe, chronic pain and post-surgical depression.
His impish humor helps.
"I am the bunny, baby!" he said gleefully, evoking the drum-pounding
rabbit from the battery commercial.
"I'm huge!" he hollered with a grin as he was delivered by wheelchair, sax
cradled on his lap, to the foot of the stage at the Seminole Hard Rock
Hotel & Casino. He stood, switched to his cane, and struggled up three
stairs. At home, he occasionally tries to walk without the cane, until his
wife catches him.

One of my first Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band shows was at the
Spectrum in Philadelphia on May 27, 1978. Of course, Bruce was phenomenal,
but I also remember how great Clarence was. He came out in an all-white
outfit for the first half of the show and after an intermission, he had on
a red outfit. He was quite the imposing figure.

Clarence was Bruce's sidekick during many of his stories, especially in
"Growin' Up." How their car broke down in the New Jersey Pine Barrens and
the two of them would meet such characters as Jim the Dancing Bear or a
gypsy fortune teller. Fun times, fun stories.

The Tunnel of Love tour in 1988 saw a slimmed-down Clarence. He looked the
best he had in years.

"Spotlight on the Big Man, don't he look great? He lost a lot of weight."
Bruce would sing during "Sweet Soul Music" in the encores.
