A study by a New Jersey university found that people who get their news
from Fox are less informed than those who get their news elsewhere, or
don't watch any news at all.

.

The same survey found viewers who get their news from Sunday morning talk
shows tend to better informed on current events.

.

The phone survey by Farleigh Dickinson University of 612 adults in New
Jersey conducted in late October.

.

Among the questions participants were asked: Did the uprising in Egypt in
the spring succeed in ousting Egyptian leader Hosni Mubarek? Researchers
found 53 percent gave the correct answer of yes, while 21 percent said the
uprisings were unsuccessful.

.

But FDU researchers found that people who watched Fox News, were 18 points
less likely to have the correct answer than people who watched no
television news at all.

.

Researchers say they used controls in their research to correct for
factors like other news sources, partisanship, education and other
demographic factors.

.

"Because of the controls for partisanship, we know these results are not
just driven by
Republicans or other groups being more likely to watch Fox News," said Dan
Cassino, a professor of political science at Fairleigh Dickinson and an
analyst for the PublicMind Poll said in a news release. "Rather, the
results show us that there is something about watching Fox News that leads
people to do worse on these questions than those who dont watch any news
at all."

.

The study found people who read national newspapers like USA Today or the
New York Times were 12 points more likely to know the correct answer about
the situation in Egypt.
