"SHARON M. SCOTT is an author and cultural historian known for examining

icons. Since beginning her career in research with ABC - Discovery News
in 1998, Scott has written reference material for a variety of sources
including Golson Media, Praeger Books, Atlanta Magazine, and Facts on

"A native of Marietta, Georgia, Sharon Scott is currently based in
Louisville, Kentucky where she has been the recipient of grants from the
Kentucky Arts Council, the Kentucky Foundation for Women, and KITLAC -
the Kentucky Interfaith Taskforce on Latin America and the Caribbean.
Scott first became interested in the cultural significance of toys when
she was introduced to the Zapatista Dolls created by the Tzotzil artisans
of San Juan de Chamula, Chiapas. After several years documenting the
ancient traditions of Mayan doll making and their relationship to
postmodern politics for zapatistadolls.com, Scott turned her attention to
American toys and their global influence."

An Encyclopedia

"Tracing developments in toy making and marketing across the evolving
landscape of the 20th century, this encyclopedia is a comprehensive
reference guide to Americas most popular playthings and the culture to
which they belong.

.

John Lloyd Wright invented Lincoln Logs in 1916 while assisting his
architect father, Frank Lloyd Wright, on the construction of the Imperial
Hotel in Japan. Barbie is based on a German doll named Bild Lilli
marketed to bachelors in German cigar stores and sex shops. She has been
the best selling American doll since her introduction in 1959. What does
the background of these toys mean? How does it relate to their
significance in popular culture?

.

From the origins of favorite playthings to their associations with events
and activities, the study of a nations toys reveals the hopes, goals,
values, and priorities of its people. Toys have influenced the science,
art, and religion of the United States, and have contributed to the
development of business, politics, and medicine. Toys and American
Culture: An Encyclopedia documents Americas shifting cultural values as
they are embedded within and transmitted by the nations favorite
playthings.

.

Alphabetically arranged entries trace developments in toy making and toy
marketing across the evolving landscape of 20th-century America. In
addition to discussing the history of Americas most influential toys, the
book contains specific entries on the individuals, organizations,
companies, and publications that gave shape to America's culture of play
from 1900 to 2000. Toys from the two decades that frame the 20th century
are also included, as bridges to the fascinating pastand the inspiring
futureof American toys."

"Thus, the entries include Mattel, Marx and Disney as well as FAO
Schwartz, Sears and Walmart. Selected articles explore the relationship
of toys to advertising, art, food and science. Issues of product safety,
gender and race stereotyping and free trade are examined in articles on
manufacturing, merchandizing, and monitoring organizations. The
importance of toy culture is reflected in entries on museum collections
and events. A special timeline links toy innovations with political and
social history. The research guide includes printed books, online
resources, films, organizations, toy shows and museums. Unfortunately,
the high quality of the work has been compromised by poor copy editing,
resulting in many misspelled words. Nonetheless, this entertaining guide
to American culture will find an interested audience in school, public
and academic libraries."
