History of the Royal Society
<http://royalsociety.org/History-of-the-Royal-Society/>
The history of science since 1660 is closely intertwined with the story of
the Royal Society.
The origins of the Royal Society lie in an "invisible college" of natural
philosophers who began meeting in the mid-1640s to discuss the ideas of
Francis Bacon. Its official foundation date is 28 November 1660, when 12
of them met at Gresham College after a lecture by Christopher Wren, the
Gresham Professor of Astronomy, and decided to found 'a Colledge for the
Promoting of Physico-Mathematicall Experimentall Learning'. This group
included Wren himself, Robert Boyle, John Wilkins, Sir Robert Moray, and
William, Viscount Brouncker.
The Society was to meet weekly to witness experiments and discuss what we
would now call scientific topics. The first Curator of Experiments was
Robert Hooke. It was Moray who first told the King, Charles II, of this
venture and secured his approval and encouragement. At first apparently
nameless, the name The Royal Society first appears in print in 1661, and
in the second Royal Charter of 1663 the Society is referred to as 'The
Royal Society of London for Improving Natural Knowledge'.
The Society found accommodation at Gresham College and rapidly began to
acquire a library (the first book was presented in 1661) and a repository
or museum of specimens of scientific interest. After the Fire of 1666 it
moved for some years to Arundel House, London home of the Dukes of
Norfolk. It was not until 1710, under the Presidency of Isaac Newton, that
the Society acquired its own home, two houses in Crane Court, off the
Strand.
In 1662 the Society was permitted by Royal Charter to publish and the
first two books it produced were John Evelyn's Sylva and Micrographia by
Robert Hooke. In 1665, the first issue of Philosophical Transactions was
edited by Henry Oldenburg, the Society's Secretary. The Society took over
publication some years later and Philosophical Transactions is now the
oldest scientific journal in continuous publication.

Royal Society
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Society>
The Royal Society of London for the Improvement of Natural Knowledge,
known simply as the Royal Society, is a learned society for science, and
is arguably the oldest such society in existence.[1] Formally founded on
15 July 1662 by Royal Charter as the "Royal Society of London", the
Society was initially an extension of the "Invisible College", with the
founders intending for it to be a place of research and discussion. The
Society today acts as a scientific advisor to HM Government, receiving a
grant-in-aid from them, funds a variety of research fellowships and
scientific start-up companies and acts as the United Kingdom's Academy of
Sciences.
The Society is governed by its Council, which is chaired by its President,
according to a set of Statutes and Standing Orders. The members of Council
and the President are elected from and by its Fellows, the basic members
of the Society, who are themselves elected by existing Fellows. There are
currently 1,314 Fellows, allowed to use the postnominal FRS, with 44 new
Fellows appointed each year. There are also Royal Fellows, Honorary
Fellows and Foreign Fellows, the latter of which are allowed to use
ForMemRS. The current President is Lord Rees of Ludlow. Since 1967 the
Society has been based at 69 Carlton House Terrace, a Grade I listed
building in central London that underwent a substantial renovation between
1999 and November 2003.

The Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, or Phil. Trans., is a
scientific journal published by the Royal Society.
Begun in 1665, it is the oldest scientific journal printed in the
English-speaking world and the second oldest in the world, after the
French Journal des svans. It has remained in continuous publication ever
since 1665, making it the world's longest running scientific journal. The
use of the word "philosophical" in the title derives from the phrase
"natural philosophy", which was the equivalent of what we would now
generically call "science".

Modern History Sourcebook:
Dr. John Wallis:
The Origin of The Royal Society, 1645-1662
<http://www.fordham.edu/halsall/mod/1662royalsociety.html>
From Account of Some Passages of his Life, 1700
About the year 1645, while I lived in London (at a time when, by our civil
wars, academical studies were much interrupted in both our Universities),
beside the conversation of divers eminent divines, as to matters
theological, I had the opportunity of being acquainted with divers worthy
persons, inquisitive into natural philosophy, and other parts of human
learning; and particularly of what has been called the New Philosophy, or
Experimental Philosophy. We did by agreements, divers of us, meet weekly
in London on a certain day, to treat and discourse of such affairs; of
which number were Dr. John Wilkins (afterward Bishop of Chester), Dr.
Jonathan Goddard, Dr. George Ent, Dr. Glisson, Dr. Merret (Drs. in
Physic), Mr. Samuel Foster, then Professor of Astronomy at Gresham
College, Mr. Theodore Hank (a German of the Palatinate, and then resident
in London, who, I think, gave the first occasion, and first suggested
those meetings), and many others. These meetings we held sometimes at Dr.
Goddard's lodgings in Wood Street (or some convenient place near), on
occasion of his keeping an operator in his house for grinding glasses for
telescopes and microscopes; sometimes at a convenient place in Cheapside,
and sometimes at Gresham College, or some place near adjoining.
Our business was (precluding matters of theology and state affairs), to
discourse and consider of Philosophical Enquiries, and such as related
thereunto: as physic, anatomy, geometry, astronomy, navigation, statics,
magnetics, chemics, mechanics, and natural experiments; with the state of
these studies, as then cultivated at home and abroad. We then discoursed
of the circulation of the blood, the valves in the veins, the venae
lactae, the lymphatic vessels, the Copernican hypothesis, the nature of
comets and new stars, the satellites of Jupiter, the oval shape (as it
then appeared) of Saturn, the spots in the sun, and its turning on its own
axis, the inequalities and selenography of the moon, the several phases of
Venus and Mercury, the improvement of telescopes, and grinding of glasses
for that purpose, the weight of air, the possibility, or impossibility of
vacuities, and nature's abhorrence thereof, the Torricellian experiment in
quicksilver, the descent of heavy bodies, and the degrees of acceleration
therein; and divers other things of like nature. Some of which were then
but new discoveries, and others not so generally known and embraced, as
now they are, with other things appertaining to what has been called The
New Philosophy, which from the times of Galileo at Florence, and Sir
Francis Bacon (Lord Verulam) in England, has been much cultivated in
Italy, France, Germany, and other parts abroad, as well as with us in
England.
