USGS Geography confronts some of the most pressing natural resource and
environmental issues of our Nation. Observing the Earth with remote
sensing satellites, USGS geographers monitor and analyze changes on the
land, study connections between people and the land, and provide society
with relevant science information to inform public decisions.

There has been increasing demand for research utilizing all information
generated from lidar remote sensing data and not just bare earth digital
elevation models (DEMs). While this technology has been a proven mapping
tool, effective for generating bare earth DEMs,research on using the
entire point cloud of this remote sensing data for scientific applications
have been slowed by:

* The high cost of collecting lidar
* A steep learning curve on research and understanding involving
utilizing the entire point cloud.

U.S. Board on Geographic Names
<http://geonames.usgs.gov/>

The U.S. Board on Geographic Names is a Federal body created in 1890 and
established in its present form by Public Law in 1947 to maintain uniform
geographic name usage throughout the Federal Government. The Board
comprises representatives of Federal agencies concerned with geographic
information, population, ecology, and management of public lands. Sharing
its responsibilities with the Secretary of the Interior, the Board
promulgates official geographic feature names with locative attributes as
well as principles, policies, and procedures governing the use of domestic
names, foreign names, Antarctic names, and undersea feature names.

The original program of names standardization addressed the complex issues
of domestic geographic feature names during the surge of exploration,
mining, and settlement of western territories after the American Civil
War. Inconsistencies and contradictions among many names, spellings, and
applications became a serious problem to surveyors, map makers, and
scientists who required uniform, non-conflicting geographic nomenclature.
President Benjamin Harrison signed an Executive Order establishing the
Board and giving it authority to resolve unsettled geographic names
questions. Decisions of the Board were accepted as binding by all
departments and agencies of the Federal Government.

The Board gradually expanded its interests to include foreign names and
other areas of interest to the United States, a process that accelerated
during World War II. In 1947, the Board was recreated by Congress in
Public Law 80-242. The usefulness of standardizing (not regulating)
geographic names has been proven time and again, and today more than 50
nations have some type of national names authority. The United Nations
stated that "the best method to achieve international standardization is
through strong programs of national standardization." Numerous nations
established policies relevant to toponomy (the study of names) in their
respective countries.

In this age of geographic information systems, the Internet, and homeland
defense, geographic names data are even more important and more
challenging. Applying the latest technology, the Board on Geographic Names
continues its mission. It serves the Federal Government and the public as
a central authority to which name problems, name inquiries, name changes,
and new name proposals can be directed. In partnership with Federal,
State, and local agencies, the Board provides a conduit through which
uniform geographic name usage is applied and current names data is
promulgated.

The GEOnet Names Server (GNS) provides access to the National
Geospatial-Intelligence Agency's (NGA) and the U.S. Board on Geographic
Names' (US BGN) database of foreign geographic feature names. The database
is the official repository of foreign place-name decisions approved by the
US BGN. Approximately 20,000 of the database's features are updated
monthly. Geographic Area of Coverage: Worldwide excluding the United
States and Antarctica. For names in the U.S. and Antarctica, visit the
United States Geological Survey (USGS) Geographic Names Information System
(GNIS) web site. The GNS contains 4.0 million features with 5.5 million
names (approximate). The coordinate system for data served by GNS is
WGS84. Coordinates in the GEOnet Names Server are approximate and are
intended for finding purposes only. The online database is updated on a
bi-weekly schedule.

U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics
U.S. Department of Labor
Overview of BLS Statistics by Geography
<http://www.bls.gov/bls/geography.htm>

For most BLS programs, data are published at the national level and are
used in a variety of ways by economists, policy makers, business people,
and private citizens. Some of our programs also publish data for smaller
geographic units so customers can focus on regional, state, or local
trends.

For example, BLS publishes separate unemployment rates for the U.S., for
Texas, and for San Antonio. We also have a national wage rate for
registered nurses, as well as wage rates for registered nurses in
California and in Los Angeles.
BLS statistics with geographic detail:

State and Local Employment
The Current Employment Statistics (CES) program provides detailed industry
data on employment, hours, and earnings of workers on nonfarm payrolls for
all 50 States, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands,
and over 400 metropolitan areas and divisions.

State and Local Unemployment Rates
The Local Area Unemployment Statistics (LAUS) program produces monthly and
annual employment, unemployment, and labor force data for geographic
regions and divisions, States, counties, metropolitan areas, and many
cities, by place of residence. Monthly unemployment statistics for States,
counties, and metropolitan areas are available in map format; see Create
Customized Maps (Unemployment Rates).

State and County Employment and Wages
The Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages program produces data for
Census regions and divisions, States, counties, metropolitan areas, and
many cities, by place of employment.

Geographic Profile
The Geographic Profile of Employment and Unemployment contains information
from the Current Population Survey (CPS) for regions and divisions, 50
States and the District of Columbia, 50 large metropolitan areas, and 17
central cities. Data are provided on the employed and unemployed by
selected demographic and economic characteristics.

Mass Layoffs
The Mass Layoff Statistics program provides data for the 50 States, the
District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico.

Consumer Price Index
Consumer price indexes are available for four broad geographic regions,
size of city distinctions, a region and city size-class cross
classification, and 27 Metropolitan Statistical Areas.

Consumer Spending
The Consumer Expenditure Survey produces spending data by various
demographic characteristics for the four geographic regions and selected
Metropolitan Statistical Areas.

Safety and Health Statistics
Nonfatal occupational injuries and illnesses data from the Survey of
Occupational Injuries and Illnesses are produced for participating States.
The total number of fatal occupational injuries occurring each year are
reported in the Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries (CFOI). These data
are available for major industry divisions and occupations by region,
State, and Consolidated Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Wages by Area and Occupation
Wage data are available by occupation for the Nation, regions, States, and
many metropolitan areas. Wage data by area and occupation are from the
National Compensation Survey, Occupational Employment Statistics Survey,
or the Current Population Survey. See Wages by Area and Occupation to
determine which information suits your needs.
In addition to what is shown on the BLS home page under "Geography," the
following information is available with geographic detail:

Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (JOLTS)
The JOLTS program provides monthly data on job openings, hires, and
separations.

The Geography and Map Division (G&M) has custody of the largest and most
comprehensive cartographic collection in the world with collections
numbering over 5 million maps, 72,000 atlases, 6,000 reference works, over
500 globes and globe gores, and numerous plastic relief models, and a
large number of cartographic materials in other formats, including
electronic. The online Map Collections represents only a small fraction
that have been converted to digital form. These images were created from
maps and atlases and, in general, are restricted to items that are in
public domain, meaning those which are not covered by copyright.
