Communication Disorders
<
http://www.disabilityresources.org/COMMUNICATION.html>
Communication disorders encompass a wide variety of problems in
speech, language, hearing and related areas. The following web sites
deal with communication disorders from a very broad perspective;
more specific sites can be found in related subjects.
American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA)
ASHA is a professional, scientific, and credentialing association
for audiologists, speech-language pathologists, and speech,
language, and hearing scientists. Its web site features a wealth of
information about speech, language, swallowing, hearing, and balance
disorders. It also includes an online directory of credentialed
audiology and speech-language-pathology programs.
General Information About Speech and Language Disorders
This fact sheet from the National Information Center for Children
and Youth with Disabilities provides a good overview and list of
resources for parents and professionals.
LarynxLink
The home page of the International Association of Laryngectomees
(IAL) provides information about speech therapists, support groups,
products, events, and other topics of interest to laryngectomees.
National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders
(NIDCD)
NIDCD conducts and supports biomedical and behavioral research
relating to hearing, balance, smell, taste, voice, speech, and
language. Its web site includes news and events, current research,
health information, and grants and contracts. Many of NIDCD's
excellent, consumer-oriented publications appear in the health
information section, along with access to other health information
databases and resources.
Net Connections for Communication Disorders and Sciences: An
Internet Guide
Judith Maginnis Kuster provides a comprehensive guide to online
resources relating to communications. Topics covered include
discussion forums and electronic newsletters, communication
disorders and sciences, speech and language disorders, stuttering,
hearing and hearing disability, online courses, commercial products,
and more. While the orientation is academic, consumers with an eye
towards good research will find the site very valuable. [Editor's
note: the pages we spot-checked in February 2001 had not been
updated since 1999.]
STSnews.com
Speech to Speech Relay (STS) enables people with speech impairments
to use their own voice or a communication device to make a phone
call. This site provides information about STS and other topics of
interest to people with speech impairments.
