"There are two views for the definition of technology. Traditionalists
view it as the systematic application of science to practical problems. A
more contemporary view is that technology is the application of knowledge
so that it can be built from one generation to the next (Braudel in Seels
& Richey, p. 7). The second view is not synonymous with integration,
although it certainly does have implications for integration, but in a
systematic way. As such, technology includes tools, processes,
applications, skills and organization.
The field of instructional technology (IT) is not synonymous with the use
of technology in education, either. Instead, it is a discipline, a field
of study, a craft, and an art. In 1994, the Association for Education
Communications and Technology (AECT) defined instructional technology as
"the theory and practice of design, development, utilization, management
and evaluation of processes and resources for learning" (Seels & Richey,
p. 1). This definition emphasized the need for balance between the
field's theory base and practical use. Additionally, it outlined the
domains IT seeks to influence.
IT meets most or all of the six characteristics of a profession as
described by James Finn (1969):
An intellectual technique
An application of that technique
A long period of training
An association of members
Enforced standards and a statement of ethics
A body of intellectual theory (p. 232)
At the time of Finn's original writing (1927), he was pushing for the
field to develop a foundational base for becoming a true profession. At
the time of his writing, he noted that of the six defining
characteristics of a profession, IT only possessed two. Finn's point is
that IT will become more credible and profesionalized as more members of
the field participate in these activities."

Welcome to the Knowledge Management Wiki Page
This Wiki Page provides an overview of the basic concepts of Knowledge
Managemment (KM).
The history, people and specific technology of KM are not covered here.
Sections on the different types of KM systems do not necessarily appear in
historical order.
Basic Concepts of Knowledge Management (KM)
What is the goal of KM?
The goal of KM is to make knowledge accessible for rapid response to
emerging situations. A practical KM system therefore enables workers to
efficiently reuse the knowledge of an organization rather than to waste
time recreating redundant knowledge.
What is the cycle of KM?
Collection
KM systems must capture new knowledge as it is generated by an
organization.
The KM system must therefore provide a convenient format for reporting new
knowledge.
Organization
KM systems provide a structure for organization that facilitates both
storage and retrieval of new knowledge.
Organization of knowledge supports the main goal of KM which is provide
easy access to knowledge for reuse.
Refinement
KM knowledge bases must be uncluttered.
Obsolete knowledge must be removed; redundant examples must be removed;
errors must be corrected. Systematic maintenance takes planning and the
allocation of time.

4.1 Additional Resources
Introduction
Prior to determining the suitability of a LMS for use in a particular
environment we need to have an understanding of the technical issues that
surround such a purchase. Along with the technical issues we need to
understand the terminology and physical equipment needed for an
installation of an LMS. This article attempts to provide the reader with
an understanding of the technical issues, terminology and physical
equipment that influence the selection of a learning management system.
Basic Needs
As training professionals we may have similar needs when it comes to
selecting a Learning Management System. Some of the basic needs may
include the following:
A system that tracks student records
A system that allows for development of training courses
A system that allows for the use of third-party courseware
A system that track student needs/requirements for training
A system that tracks student requirements in relation to
certifications/licenses
A system that includes standard and customizable reporting
A system that allows for a variety of forms of communication
A System that allows for easy retrieval of stored information
