This site is operated by the Pew Center on the States, a research
organization administered by the University of Richmond, and funded by The
Pew Charitable Trusts.

Stateline.org was founded in order to help journalists, policy makers and
engaged citizens become better informed about innovative public policies.
Devolution and growing political gridlock in Washington have made the
states more than ever the laboratories of democracy. But the changing
economics of the news business has had a severe impact on the size of the
press corps covering state capitals. Television news has virtually
abandoned the capitals and newspapers have, in many cases, downsized their
statehouse bureaus or closed them.

While we cannot fill the void created by these actions and do not aspire
to cover every issue in every capital, we will follow the development of
major issues as they appear on the public agenda in a critical number of
states. These issues will change over time but they now include:

Welfare and Social Policy
Taxes/Budget
Land Use
Environment
Growth Management
Transportation
Healthcare
Crime and Courts
Education
Campaign Finance

Since a major portion of education law and policy for elementary,
secondary and higher education happens at the state level, this resource
is an important information source for educators.
