This is a response to a question on another list asking essentially
whether Google Books is a useful tool for including in the information
search process of library responses to topical information requests.
Google Books and its predecessor Google Print have been favorite topics
with me and I use Google Books constantly. Google Books facilitates
finding picky topics within books, like the impact Ronald Reagan had on
the jelly bean industry.

To weigh this issue on the musical scale, consider this search.
Book Search Books 1 - 10 of 35 on tuba and mouth and injuries.
Now I doubt there is a whole book anywhere in the world devoted to mouth
injuries from the tuba, perhaps one about ear injuries from hearing the
tuba in a small room, but here are the titles found in this tuba search.

The second search seems to have a higher relevancy rate.
The first search produced limited results and most off topic as for one
thing the body seems to have a part with tuba in its name.
This search is more productive:
Book Search Books 1 - 10 of 530 on violin and hand and injuries.
One can also try one at a time the plural of violin and of hand and the
singular of injuries until one has mixed all possible combinations.
Google search capabilities quickly teach one to appreciate the
capabilities of online databank searching tools in places like EBSCO,
OVID, CSA, and DIALOG amongst others.

In short one big value of Google Books is that it gets inside books to
some spot that has your topics in books one would never think of to find a
useful piece. Results in searches will find many books that simply do not
have this relevant spot, so one has to pick the fruits of the search that
are of the nature one is looking and discard the ones that are a
completely different fruit from the fruit cocktail tree.

By the way, some of the results one finds in Google Scholar are book
sources that provide similar citations to those in Google Books. However,
in Google Scholar, one finds a hyperlinked numerical link to the articles
or other sources that cite the work found in the entry observed. Consider

To summarize regarding Google Books, I have found both Google Books and
Google Scholar invaluable in searches for mediated search clients as each
gets the user to results one may will not find elsewhere, but one has to
pick a search strategy that gets at ones content effectively and perhaps
try several versions as the search capabilities on databases are lacking
in Google for the multistep complex search of a topic.
This search will be much more precise in its results than the tuba search,
for example, as there is not the amiguity of word meanings found in the
tuba search.
Book Search Books 1 - 10 of 120 on "musical instruments" and musicians
and injuries.
