You may readily think of your local public library when you or your child
have a school assignment to complete, or when you simply want to make the
best of your leisure time with a good book, album or movie.
But do you think of the library when you need financial information?
May Memorial Library in downtown Burlington devotes a section of its
reference department especially to business and financial research, and
the Graham and Mebane branches are also well-equipped to answer many of
your questions.

The business reference collection consists of books, periodicals, and
electronic resources. It also provides access to investment, small
business, and employment resources; data on the local business environment
and the broader national economy; and consumer information.
The staff of Alamance County Public Libraries can assist you whether you
are an investor, entrepreneur, employee or consumer. A few examples of
questions we regularly answer will help to illustrate how:

--How can I research a stock or mutual fund before I decide what to buy?
Value Lines Investment Surveys, Standard & Poors Outlook and Morningstars
Mutual Funds are weekly and bi-weekly periodicals that provide analysis of
individual stocks and mutual funds and commentary on the markets as a
whole. Value Line and Morningstar are also available in online versions.
Other periodicals located in business reference include Business North
Carolina, Minority Business Entrepreneur and the U.S. Department of
Commerces Survey of Current Business. Those shelved in the general
periodicals collection include Barrons, Black Enterprise, Investors
Business Daily, Kiplingers, Triad Business Journal and the Wall Street
Journal.

--We are settling my fathers estate and need to know what he paid for his
shares of Acme stock on June 7, 1981. Where would we find that
information? May Memorial Library has the Wall Street Journal on microfilm
from 1968 to 1999, and the Times-News from the late 1920s to the present.
Both provide access to past stock and mutual fund prices. Mergers and name
changes can make it difficult to find old stock prices, but those
mysteries are solved with the help of the International Directory of
Company Histories.

Introduction

Sports is big, big business not only in the United States but around the
world. Millions and millions of dollars are spent at sporting events and
on sports-related equipment and apparel. According to charts based on data
from the National Sporting Goods Association and published in the
2004-2005 Statistical Abstract of the United States, sales for all
athletic and sports clothing for 2002 were almost $10 billion dollars
while sales for athletic and sports equipment were over $21 billion 1.
Receipts from spectator sports events for 2002 were over $1.5 billion
dollars. 2

This guide is devoted to those sports that are the largest in terms of
monies at the professional level and/or which attract the greatest
attention from the general population. As a result, not every sport is
included. The primary focus is on the sports industry in the United States
although there are a few instances in which the international aspects of
the industry are mentioned. Because of the focus on professional sports,
the Olympics and other amateur events are not included. For sources of
information about the Olympics, see The Olympics: A Guide to Reference
Sources . Each section of the guide contains links to print and electronic
resources, as well as quick links to relevant LC catalog searches.

Scope of This Guide

This pathfinder is by no means meant to be all inclusive. The sources
included constitute some of the more basic resources and assistance to get
researchers started. Many of the standards publications included are
updated on a yearly basis so be sure to use the most updated edition. As
for textbooks, I have only included some. Since there are many different
textbooks by many different authors, different levels - beginning and
intermediate - with different authors, I have only included a sample. Be
aware that these are also updated on a fairly frequent basis.
