The Adirondacks come alive at the Adirondack Museum. Called "the best of
its kind in the world," by the New York Times, and "the Smithsonian of the
Adirondacks," by the National Geographic Traveler, the Adirondack Museums
20 outdoor and indoor exhibit areas, fantastic views, and live programming
tell the stories of how people lived, worked, and played in this six
million acre wilderness. Special 2002 exhibits: "In Search of a National
Landscape: William Trost Richards and the Artists Adirondacks, 1855-1870";
"Wilderness in the Eye of the Camera: Eliot Porter and Gary Randorf;"
"Living with Wilderness;" and "Theodore Roosevelt, Naturalist and
Conservationist." Visit the new Visitor Center, Museum Store and remodeled
Lake View Cafe. Open Memorial Day weekend through mid-October.

The Adirondack History Center Museum, of the Essex County Historical
Society, displays artifacts from over two centuries of life in Essex
County and the central Adirondacks. The diverse collection includes:
artifacts from 18th century forts at Crown Point, an 1850s Washington
printing press, an 1887 Concord stagecoach, a 1920s stage curtain
advertising area businesses, an extensive collection of antique dolls, an
iron bobsled from the 1932 Olympic Games, an Adirondack lean-to, and a
58-foot Fire Observation Tower to climb. The museum publishes On the Trail
of John Brown: What Mary Brown Saw, a 24-page tour guide based upon what
Mary Brown saw as the funeral cortege of John Brown, the abolitionist,
traveled from the train depot in Vergennes, Vermont to the family farm in
North Elba, New York.

Founded in 1791, the Albany Institute of History & Art, one of the oldest
museums in the United States, is dedicated to collecting, preserving,
interpreting and promoting interest in the history, art and culture of
Albany and the Upper Hudson Valley. The museum achieves this mission
through its collections, exhibitions, education programs, library,
research projects, publications and other programs offered to the general
public. The Institutes City Neighbors Project brings curators, librarians,
historians and folklorists together with members of the community to tell
the story of Albanys diverse past. Components of the project include
collecting oral histories; conducting scholarly research; adding objects,
photographs and research materials to the museum and library collections;
and reaching new audiences through exhibitions, education programs and
special events.

American History Workshop is a consortium of historians, writers,
designers, and filmmakers who enliven public understanding of our peoples
history, producing public programs to connect Americans with their past.
Their clients include museums, historical societies, historic districts,
parks and gardens, filmmakers, public agencies, businesses, citizens
groups, television stations, and others involved in interpreting history.
One of their aims is to find the forgotten voices in the American past,
and to show that life in the most ordinary circumstances and the most
local places can be connected to the larger stories of the American

The American Italian Heritage Museum opened on Friday, August 7, 2009. It
is owned and operated by the American Italian Heritage Association founded
in 1979, with members in 34 states and 4 nations. There are 8 rooms that
honor and tells the story of the Italian immigrants and the contributions
of Italian American. The unique mission style building was completed in
1922; many Italian immigrants help build the church which was built for
Our Lady of Mercy. In 1975, they sold the building and built a new church
a couple of blocks away. The museum is staffed with volunteers and open
Monday, Thursdays, and Fridays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Saturday and
Sundays from 12 noon to 4 p.m. It is closed on major holidays and has a
different schedule in the winter.
