IT WAS IN 1971 at that magic time of Whitsuntide that John Napper moved
into Steadvallets, the house that for the rest of his life was such a
powerful source of inspiration. Here in this isolated farmhouse after
nearly fifty years of living a peripatetic existence his work finally
found stability. For the next thirty years in a continuous stream of
pictures he embarked upon what was essentially a spiritual journey,
exploring the interrelatedness of the whole of creation, seeking to
capture the harmony that exists between all things in their natural state.
The paintings featured here are from his last years, by which time he had
delved deep. They are thought-provoking as often as they are beautiful and
depend upon the timeless geometric principles of balance and harmony for
their construction. Their vocabulary is drawn exclusively from the magical
landscape of his home.
This eighteenth-century farmhouse is tucked away from the teeming world in
a velvet fold of the South Shropshire countryside. Below the house a river
carves its way out of a steep-sided gorge to cascade in rapids over
boulders and storm-felled trees, then more peacefully into dense woodland.
Birds abound. Kingfishers and dippers dart along the banks, finches
fluster in the hedgerows, fieldfares and redwings cloud the ploughed
earth, and in the orchard the partridge and the pheasant patrol. The
majestic outline of Titterstone Clee dominates this tranquil scene.
