Three P&W units led a solid train of crushed stone hoppers off the East Wye at about 0600 this AM.

Anyone know the origin and/or destination of this train?

Sorry didn't get the numbers but lead unit looked like an ex BN-SF unit followed by a P&W GE B-Unit and another P&W unit both in the familiar P&W livery.

Its lime for the scrubbers at PSNH. Originated at Providence, Rhode Island last week. You have 582 3006 4006 for power. Lime comes from Canada.

Thanks very much for identifying this shipment. Never saw anything like it. Could it be crushed limestone rather than lime? If it originated in Providence, it must have come in by sea. Must be more economical than an all-rail shipment.

Ron,

Down here is southern Maryland, the 2 large power plants use crushed limestone delivered by CSX along with liquid urea in tank cars used in the pollution control process.

Hope the attachment works. Its rather a coarse crush. Kept indoors at the port to prevent contamination. Same at PSNH. We'll be doing a lime load once a month....Ron

Thanks. That's how it looked from the overpass in Ayer. Cars cannot be loaded fully like coal because the density of limestone is so much higher (about 80 pounds/CF vs bituminous coal at about 50 pounds/CF).

Those cars were used with coal. When the lime started, they needed to be thoroughly cleaned. Those are leased cars the PW keeps around just for lime. And someone asked...lime comes to Providence via ship.

Glad to help, Ron
