Has anyone heard anything about Gold Medal Flour in Fall River receiving rail shipments? I heard from someone yesterday Gold Medal wants to reactivate a siding from the Fall River Yard to their plant.

This has been a story around for over 20 years and if it happened I would be surprised. They can't rely on rail to run their huge bakery as an interruption of flour would shut down their plant causing great costs and lost customers. We did a feasibility study on running a small railroad to service them from Fall River as Conrail at the time was not interested. They use so much flour that it takes 8 trucks a day to supply them.  An additional load can be scheduled and on the road in hours should need be.  8 trucks equals 2 railcars and the shipping cost savings would be enormous and probably several hundreds of thousand a year. They would have to have service more than once a week maybe even daily to keep it running.   Freight shipments to Fall River were unreliable so it has been passed over as a decision by the family that owns the bakery many many times.

I would be surprised but its not inconceivable as it would save money,  Let me know if you hear anymore as it would be a nice thing to happen.

George,

I haven't been to Fall River in ages! I vaguely recall where the Globe Medal Bakery is.

From what I have been told, it seems Gold Medal has been getting rail shipments into the Fall River Yard and they want to bring them right into the plant area.

There has been some discussion on a few of the rail groups about rebuilding the spur into the Bakery area. I took a quick glance at it on Google Earth the other night. It looks like it will cost a mini fortune with all of the grass and shrubs gowning along it, but doable.

The Mass Bay RR Enthusiast is having a rail excursion down there in the spring using the Cape Cod Diner Train equipment. I am thinking about taking it. It's an all day event with an hour layover time.

Peace
Bob

Last time I was there the track was still there with sidings and run around siding but the ties would need replacement after all these years.   There is a savings of 1/4 cent for using rail which was given to the buyer back around 1992. Don't know if that is still the same but it adds up if you do the math on 180,000 lbs per car at 2 a day.   Mass Coastal must have gone after the business.  Conrail was arrogant about it and turned them away with poor service.  That sounds like another RR I know.
Great news have to make some calls.
