Anode drivers for panaplex displays

Hi All,
Best wishes and Happy New Year to everyone!

I have got a few panaplex displays, so just looking for chip/chips I
can use to drive 7-17 anodes and about 10 cathodes, as these panaplex
displays work only in multiplex mode.
I really don't want to use transistors as it's too many -about 14-34
transistors plus lots of resistors too just for anode driver
circuit...

So far found just one reasonable solution - to use HV7022C Supertex as
anode driver and second similar chip or other well know Supertex chips
for cathode drivers.
Unlike MAX6921 or other lower voltage Supertex chips, HV7022C looks
like works only in either Sink or Source mode.

Do you think it is the only way to go or you can advise/suggest
something else, please?

Not sure if it is the _only_ way to go, but I certainly think that it is a great way to go. I believe that those chips are SPI, so no need for additional latches and such. I'm not sure what those chips cost, but they very happily sampled me a big pile a long while back.

VU-meter with a Burrough's BG12201 bargraph display.

The BG12201 differs, as far as I know, from your BG12205 in so far that your
displays have solderable leads and the BG 12201 has a slot between the two
glass plates in what you can put a kind of connector.

yes these chips are not cheap, but quicker way to assemble pcb with it
compare to tens of transistors and resistors...

Looks like you have not used Supertex chips much for panaplex
displays, but has anybody ever built clock on panaplex displays? If
so, what have you used for anode and cathede drivers?

Try to look for Pinball machine schematics as they often use Panaplex
displays there.

There are quite a few display units sold on eBay which you might buy
to do some reverse-engineering on if you can't find a schematic for
them.

Hi All,
As you might remember, I was looking for anode drives solution for
panaplex display and thanks to Martin, he advised to look at PinBall
displays, so now I have a very few Pinball Display Clocks available
for sale. ;-)
If anybody interested, please have a look at my web site front page at

Pinball display circuit diagram does not help me a lot, as they used
just transistor switched, which I do not really want to use on my
other panaplex clock project based on Russian IGP-17 16 digits display
panels, but I realy love Pinball display Clock and already have one in
my collection...

That is a cool clock, the display looks so bright! I was wondering, as
you have 7 digits, if you can set the clock to display the tenths of
seconds as well (like the Heathkit GC-1000)?

You are right, clocks brigness is quite high, but clock has 5
brigtness levels.
Yes, tenths of seconds could be done quite easy on the clock SW
level...
