Phasing streams...negative tilted 5H trof...incredible amounts of Gulf
o'Mexico moisture invading the mid-Atlantic...significant comma head /
deformation. HPC seems to think a major winter event is in the offing
this weekend...so it's high time for Contest #4.

Odd 'Miller A/B'-looking cyclone this go'round... altho secondary
coastal development isn't in response to northern stream energy but a
second....southern stream short-wave flying east after under-cutting
the high-amplitude long-wave ridge along west coast.
-----
Deadline: 10:30 PM EST THU...04-FEB-10

Forecast element: storm-total snowfall
Verification begins: 12:01 AM EST FRI...05-FEB-10
Verification ends: 11:59 PM EST SAT...06-FEB-10

Enter your forecast at the Contest web site @ http://www.newx-forecasts.com/
Follow the link from 'Enter Storm Forecast.'

As always...there/s no cost...or fee...or annoying requests for
personal information to enter. Just a fun exercise to see who can make
the best synoptic-scale snowfall forecast.

If you are issuing your first forecast this year...or you entered the
'season-total' forecast contest...you/ll need to create an account
(user name / password / valid e-mail...if you want a copy of your
forecast sent to your Inbox).

I still can't believe this. Were it not for the 47" we got the first
week of ought 10, we'd be neck and neck w/ gdam DC/PHL for total
snowfall this year. Hard to imagine. I'll have to make sure we keep
sacrificing cats and other live animals to the lake snow gods...which
is working out ok, just punched thru 80" for the season this evening
with a fresh 3" and counting.

Fan-tab-u-lous turn-out for Storm4. Good to see some old familiar
faces again.

28 entries...including 10 Rookies... seven of which entered their
first contest this winter...three Interns...one Journeyman...and 12
Senior forecasters...issued 446 station forecasts for the winter/s 4th
contest snow storm.

Everyone's station forecasts have been posted on the Contest's web
site.

How has RIC fared? Looked like maybe a couple inches up front then
rain...now back to SN...

Unbelievable amounts towards DC and BALT...

Check out the DCA "official" #s...way low compared to everything else
around them (other NWS Climate stations in area and CoCoRAHS / PNS
reports. What gives there? Their Liquid Equivalents have also been
33-50% lower than anything around them...and radar doesn't support a
snow-hole theory...

BWI snow-total trubbles:
"The contractor measured every hour on the hour and added it up. That produced a total of 28.6 inches.
He also took a "snow depth" reading, meaning that he measured all the snow at once, after it stopped falling.
Because of compaction, that came to 24.7 inches."

NWS won't know 'for days' how much fell officially.
Shouldn't have an impact on scoring forecasts for the Contest.

RIC picked up 2.5" yesterday and possibly 4" today...altho the 4/group carried a 3 this afternoon.
RIC was under the def zone's pivot-point all morning where dark green reflectivities
were observed marking time.

I got 2" this afternoon as the comma head swung through...hard to see how RIC got less.

DCA's SWRs past few storms have been wacky.  Latest data I have is 17.9" from 0.99" liquid for a
SWR of 18:1...comparable to IAD (20:1) and BWI (23:1).  Seems high given how 'warm' it was.

Also be on the look-out for spurious claims about a 'blizzard'...b/c I couldn't find a single station reporting
anything close the 3-hr wind and vis criteria.
