The Lake Shore Limited starts in Boston, so there's no reason to take
the commuter rail first (unless you're starting in the suburbs). But
it only runs once a day, and is often very late eastbound.
And worst of all, it leaves you in downtown Springfield, which is
little help to someone trying to go to Amherst or Northampton. I

You could alternatively take the Commuter rail out to Worcester, then
take Amtrak to Springfield on the 449 Lake Shore Limited train.

I was recently thinking that someone should start a discount bus
between Boston and the Pioneer Valley, and I just came across a new
one.
[link] is a van service between Alewife and Amherst/
Northampton. It has one trip each way Friday-Sunday, and costs
$19.95. They say they could cancel a trip if not enough people buy

Wellesley bridge project delayed another year

The bridge carrying Route 16 over Route 9 in Wellesley, Mass.
will not be complete before next summer. The two year project
started in 2003.

Well, we're about halfway there (to 2020). Lots of development in the Lechmere
area. Kendall Square supposedly coming into its own as a mixed-use
neighborhood. (See Globe Magazine article earlier this year.) Still no MBTA
bus between Kendall and Lechmere. Comments?

At the Rt 2A/119 approach to the Concord Rotary there are multiple
new signs saying enter single lane only,form one lane (the road is
only one lane),yield,and a couple others all crowded on to one island.
On Route 2 between 128 and Cambridge a recent stimulus contract added
exit speed signs on their own posts without removing the old ones

As part of the recent economic stimulus reconstruction, they've gone
way overboard with signs on Massachusetts expressways. There are
something like 12 small signs per mile on various roads -- the new
2/10 mile markers, multiple speed limit signs per exit segment, route
name reminders, and other random signs.

New exit off Route 128?

Braintree, Mass. accepted part of Wood Road as a public way
in order to advance plans for a new ramp connecting that
road to Route 128 (aka I-93). I don't think that project
will ever be built. The only way to really improve traffic
flow through the area involves paving over part of the Blue
Hills reservation. I'd like to see Route 28 partially
