Falmouth another place to stay away from.

I attended the open sound level testing session in Falmouth, Ma. Sgt
Dunne was in charge. It seemed open and on the up and up, until I read
the article in the local paper. Dunne was reported to have told the
attending riders about the consequnces of refusing the in field
testing. He never mentioned that to refuse the test and get a $50
dollar ticket or take the test, fail and get the $50 ticket and the 6
year surcharge. By my own reasoning The "correct" answer is refusing
the test. Go to court and win. Judging the sound level of anything is
very subjective.

I know I work as an engineer in an acoustics department in a world
famous organization.

Sure it is... unless you have an accurate SPL meter and a tapemeasure.

Well, I'm sure your un-muffled pipes are doing your hearing and your career
a world of good.

I can't even figure out how people with modified exhausts get inspection
stickers in the first place. If the cops had any brains, they'd figure out
who inspected the offenders and have the RMV pay them a visit.

Don't get me wrong, I will defend to the death your right to destroy your
hearing and annoy wildlife... as long as 1) you don't do it anywhere near
me, and 2) I don't have to pay for your hearing aids (directly or
indirectly).

First of all, I ride a bike - a Honda with an original, unmodified
muffler. Let's just get that out of the way.

Second, I have never been able to understand why some bikers think it's
ok to go the "straight pipes" (or acoustical equivalent) route.

Surely, you must realize that the sound is obnoxious. You show a
complete lack of consideration for everybody within earshot - and that
can be an awful long way away. You wake babies, scare elderly drivers
and annoy adults.

All for what? So you can sound like a tough guy? A real tough guy
doesn't need to impress others by being an inconsiderate jerk. Or by
using the same open pipes that any kid can buy.

And if you can be honest with yourself for just a minute, you probably
feel the same annoyance when a punk with a KW of bass pounding out the
hip-hop comes driving down your street shaking the windows out of your
house.

Let's not roll out that tired old excuse of "safety" either. You know
darn well that the best safety measure is your alertness and defensive
riding. You would be more visible with flashing pink lights - you want
to try that in the name of safety?

So try this. Put the factory pipes back on and don't be a jerk. Nobody
will think any less of you - in fact, you'll sound like a someone who is
strong enough to think for himself.
