How many folks think ne.general.selected would be a more pleasant place
to hang out if the following were automatically excluded:

• The aol, yahoo, and webtv domains
• Any domain that is not valid
• All posts coming from a Web interface rather than a news client
(including Google Groups)

I realize there is no way to require people to quit hiding behind
juvenile pseudonyms, but if the above categories were blocked, we'd have
a lot less crap from these teenage jerks. We'd just have us adult jerks
to contend with, but we can handle that, right?

I think this place works OK as is. It's not like there's a lot of
traffic here, so there's a lot of spam. Of course, there are juvenile
jerks around, but it doesn't seem like it's hard to weed them out.

Teenage jerks will eventually grow up, chronologically if not otherwise.
And even the juvenile stuff that's posted here is mostly on-topic,
even if it contains a lot of nonsense.

Plus, it's a lot of work to maintain a moderation-bot - not hard
technically, but it's still work. Trust me, I know. And it's mostly
thankless. It's moderation, and more people will resist it than will
support it. (Right, Alan? :-)

I think your second and third criteria should be implemented ASAP, but
(surprisingly) there's still alot of responsible non-jerks using AOL and
Yahoo.

While we're on the subject, could you or someone using Outlook Express tell
me if there's a way to filter out cross-posting to more than two ng's? I
can't find it in OE's message rules config boxes.

What are you referring to? The dust-up several years ago over at ne.weather
and the advent of ne.weather.moderated?

Yep. I still get a couple of backhand remarks from you per year for
that, don't I? (No offense taken, BTW.)

And BTW, I don't know of any way you can filter cross-posts in Outlook
Express (or in Thunderbird, for that matter). *That* alone would make
ne.weather almost readable (for me). I finally gave up trying to
maintain my ne.weather killfile, which meant giving up ne.weather.

I did a fair amount of posting from Google Groups when I was spending
forty hours per week gainfully employed, (OTOH, I usually delete
ne.g.s from my explicit list of newsgroups because I don't read it,
and I don't like the confirmation messages in my mailbox.)

I've got two words for you, Steve Bousey. I'll never use a real name
on Usenet because I ususally post and read from work and I don't want
my boss or employer to get involved in my personal opinions.

And it's a good thing you misspelled the words (the reason for ne.g.sel in
the first place), otherwise I think your post wouldn't have made it past the
bot! :-)

Googling Steve Boursey reveals that he died earlier this year.
The end of an era.

You must have me confused with someone else. I weighed in with one or two
posts on ne.weather when the new group was proposed, but I was mostly
ambivalent* about it. I don't recall** any verbal jousts with you at the
time, and definitely haven't made any references to the subject in
general -- or you in particular.

If you were hit by any verbal shrapnel, it surely was unintended, as my
target (as it was for nearly everyone) surely was Charles K., who seemed to
be offended by posts which expressed anything more colorful than "have a
nice day."

* Ambivalent because I was already getting sick of the ng and, like
yourself, have long since abandoned that online wasteland.

** Google's archives might prove me wrong, but I doubt it. Even at the ripe
old age of 55 my memory is still just short of photographic.

Huh. I'm sorry for the accusation. (I'll check out the Google to see
who it was :-)

Again, sorry.

Anyway, I vote for leaving the bot as-is. The vociferous ranters
don't seem to stick around very long anyway.

I would support a bot that forces supermodels to post their pix to the
group :-)

(ya know, Camp Crystal Lake and all that)

Geez, that was unnecessary. I was just thinking aloud, not looking for an
apology.

I feel so bad that you apologized I'm tempted to flame you in public so you
can retract it! :>)

It's ashame that ne.weather went to hell in a handbasket, because from about
1995-'98 it was a pretty civil, informative ng. Same thing happened to
another of my favorites -- dc.general.

Best wishes.

That's really sad. I don't have it any longer but for many years I
kept and treasured hate mail I had received from him.

My goodness - that's a blast from the past! I couldn't find the obit, but

If it became necessary to be that exclusive here, a moderated web-board
(blog?) would be the hot setup OR a fully moderated newgroup (moderators
must individually approve all posts except perhaps from verified users).

And yet, oddly, that isn't the question I posed.
